Iowa PBS Uses New Digital Platforms to Enhance Early Learning

On-air programming, digital resources, partnerships and community activities provide opportunities for kids and families to learn and explore.

Johnston, IA - This fall, IPTV is wrapping up efforts to provide digital learning resources and community activities to kids and families living in Burlington, Denison and Sioux City. Supported by a Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS Ready to Learn grant, IPTV has been working with community partners since May 1, 2014 to increase children’s early learning skills via online learning experiences from PBS KIDS Apps and PBS KIDS Lab.

“The tablets that we purchased with the Ready to Learn grant have done major things for the Beyond the Bell program. They have allowed our teachers to utilize many educational applications to help them during tutoring sessions,” said Jenna Meyer, Program Director for Beyond the Bell in Sioux City. “The other major use for these tablets is to have them available to all students during regular program hours. They are out each day and accessible for students to use during center time. It allows for independent learning for those kiddos that don't always want to participate in group activities.”

In addition to the targeted communities involved in the grant project, the new digital resources have been used in at least seventy-five other communities equipped with iPad labs across Iowa.

Digital Resources IPTV provides families with educational ideas and online resources. PBS KIDS Lab provides learning games and activities as well as many educator resources. PBS KIDS provides parents with daily learning tips, extended learning ideas and recommended games and activities regularly. Free apps offered to parents and kids to support learning, including the PBS KIDS Super Vision app, now available on Apple Watch, and the popular PBS KIDS Video app.
