Photographer Focuses on Female Farmers wins Iowa Broadcast News Association Award

Photographer Focuses on Female Farmers, a piece produced and presented by IPTV, was recently recognized by the Iowa Broadcast News Association (IBNA) with a first place award in the Farm and Agribusiness category.

IPTV’s Laurel Bower Burgmaier directed, produced and wrote Photographer Focuses on Female Farmers. It profiles photographer Marji Guyler-Alaniz, an artist who, through photography, documents the important role that women play in the agriculture system.

Photographer Focuses on Female Farmers will be rebroadcast during Market to Market on statewide IPTV on Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 10 at 12:30 p.m. The program can also be seen on Saturday, May 9 at 8 a.m. on IPTV WORLD (.3).

Women currently run about 14 percent of the nation’s farms. Though there are grain and livestock operations among them, many women farmers are part of the growing organic and local foods movements. While women have always been an important part of agriculture, Guyler-Alaniz felt they were mostly undocumented. Her FarmHer project is profiled in Photographer Focuses on Female Farmers
