Apple Cheddar Crisp

Sweet and savory! Try out this classic dish with a twist.


  • 4 cups Jonathan, Granny Smith or other baking apple, cored, and cut into 1 inch chunks
  • Zest and Juice of 1 orange
  • 4 Tbsp. organic cane sugar
  • = Topping:
  • 6 oz. butter
  • 1 cup Whole Wheat AP or Pastry Flour
  • 3/4 cups rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4 oz. cheddar cheese, small cubes
  • ½ cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp. salt


In food processor, pulse butter into flour until small crumbs form.  Add oats, cheese, sugar, nuts and salt, pulse until combined.  Set aside.

Meanwhile: Preheat oven to 375°F.  Butter or spray with a cooking spray, a 9 inch pie pan or an 8 x 8 baking dish.  Set aside. Place the apple chunks and orange zest in a large bowl. Toss with the orange juice and sugar. Transfer to your prepared baking dish. Spread the topping evenly over the apples.  Bake for 25-35 minutes until golden brown.
