In the far northwest corner of Iowa border in South Dakota to the west and Minnesota directly north is Gitchi Manitou State Preserve. The small patch of natural Prairie is home to Sioux quartzite outcroppings, the oldest surface bedrock in Iowa. The quartzite -  visible from above  - is roughly 1.6 billion years old.
