Many of the young dancers who competed in the championships when they were first held four decades ago now have grandchildren participating in the event.  One multi-generational dance family, from Monroe, shares a passion for dance that has inspired them to coach future dancers.

More than 5,000 of Iowa’s top dancers competed in the 2016 Iowa State Dance Team Championships.  This is the 40th anniversary of the contest, which was first held in 1976 with only nine teams competing.  Today, the event is held at Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines, where a record-setting 270 high school teams, along with 25 collegiate teams, make this one of the largest and most prestigious dance competitions in the nation.
