Celebrate Día de los Muertos with Iowa PBS

Oct 15, 2021

Iowa PBS’s Día de los Muertos digital-first initiative to educate and inspire audiences about the significance of the Day of the Dead celebration is now in the Young Explorers collection on PBS LearningMedia.

Your young explorers will learn all about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), where the celebration started and how the influence of the Catholic church changed, but did not remove, the celebration from Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

Marigolds and monarch butterflies play a special role in the ofrenda, one of the key aspects of the Día de los Muertos celebration. Help spark some creativity and remember a loved one by building an ofrenda with your young explorer.

Every ofrenda for the Día de los Muertos celebration, no matter the Spanish-speaking country, has marigolds and pan de muertos, the traditional bread of the Day of the Dead celebration.

Can’t find live marigolds for your Día de los Muertos celebration? Teach your young explorer how to craft their own marigolds out of paper.

Come explore and celebrate the Hispanic tradition of Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) with Iowa PBS!

This digital-first initiative was made possible through a partnership with the Des Moines Art Center.
