Volunteer Information

We invite you to volunteer...

Each year, over 1,200 people volunteer their time and talents to help support Friends of Iowa PBS. Their contributions amount to thousands of hours. All of our activities, from our annual on-air membership drive to our day-to-day operations, rely heavily on people like you. It is easy to say that without our volunteers, Friends of Iowa PBS would not be able to deliver the high quality of service we have all come to rely on.

Volunteering for Friends of Iowa PBS is an opportunity to:

  • Involve yourself in a resource for all Iowans.
  • Help keep public television accessible and of high quality.
  • Meet new people.
  • Have fun!
  • Make a difference!!

Volunteer Opportunities

Festival is our annual on-air membership drive. It requires a major volunteer effort to make it successful. Over fifty companies and associations volunteer nearly 1,000 of their employees and/or members to answer telephones during our two-week on-air campaign. Volunteers are also needed behind the scenes for hospitality and clerical support on a nightly basis. Additionally, volunteers are recruited to answer telephones and take pledges during early morning and late afternoons.

Day-to-Day Operations/Office Support

Volunteers are needed to help us maintain our high level of customer service to our members and viewers. Our Membership, Promotions/Special Events, and Major Donations areas depend on volunteers for a variety of jobs. These include data entry, processing mail, preparation of special mailings, general clerical duties, or unique special projects.

Special Events

Throughout the year, Friends of Iowa PBS hosts special functions. Each year we sponsor several concerts and performances at the network studio. To help make these events a success, volunteers are needed for a variety of duties, including ushering, taking tickets, running errands, or staffing a membership table.

Statewide Friends Volunteers

As a statewide resource, Friends of Iowa PBS wants to identify people around the entire state who are interested in supporting and promoting the programs and activities of Iowa PBS within their own local area. These volunteers might be asked to write letters to their local newspaper, post promotional materials on community bulletin boards, represent Friends of Iowa PBS in local events or recruit new members for Friends.

State/County Fairs or Community Happenings

Wherever a Friends of Iowa PBS booth could provide visibility and an opportunity to meet the public, volunteers would be invaluable in identifying such events, helping with setting up the booth and receiving supplies, and staffing the booth. Staffing the booth would involve meeting and greeting the public and handing out brochures or other informational materials.
