Economic Outlook: May 14, 2021

May 14, 2021  | Ep4639

Doors are swinging wider as vaccination rates move higher and pandemic restrictions are lifted. However, the excitement of cash in hand from the economic stimulus appears to have faded. ---

After rocketing 8.9 percent higher in March, retail sales were flat in April. Sales of clothing, sporting goods, and books pulled against increased car and auto part sales.

Without those sales, the index rose 0.8 percent.

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.8 percent in April, the sharpest rise since the height of the Great Recession in 2008.

Without the price swings brought on by food and energy, core CPI moved 0.9 percent higher - the biggest monthly jump in nearly 40 years.
