Hunger fighters from across the globe honor award-winning achievements with the 2023 World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony. Join Iowa PBS for a night of remembrance, pageantry, music and a celebration of agricultural breakthroughs in the battle against global hunger during the 2023 World Food Prize. Iowa PBS will present a livestream of the laureate award ceremony on Thursday, October 26 at 6:45 p.m. A 30-minute special of the event will air on Friday, October 27 at 8:30 p.m.

The 2023 prize will be awarded to Heidi Kühn, founder of Roots of Peace, for her farmer-focused development model that revitalizes farmland, food security, livelihoods and resilience after devastating conflict. For more than two decades, she has shown more than a million people living in war-torn regions around the world a way forward for restoring peace and prosperity through agriculture.

“It is with immense gratitude and a sense of responsibility that I humbly accept the World Food Prize this year on behalf of Roots of Peace and the farming families of war-torn countries across the world,” said Kühn. “This prestigious award underscores the importance of our mission to revitalize agriculture in post-conflict areas, as a means of healing both the land and its people.”

The World Food Prize was founded by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Iowan Norman Borlaug. After winning the Nobel Prize in 1970 for his achievements in agricultural research, Borlaug envisioned a separate international award to recognize those who have made significant contributions to advancements in the quality, quantity and availability of food in the world.

Programming support for the 2023 World Food Prize is provided by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
