Iowa PBS Showcases Revolutionary Iowans Through Statewide Exhibits and New Programming
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Iowa PBS is highlighting the people and stories that continue to define the American spirit. While Iowa was not part of the Revolutionary War itself, generations of Iowans have embodied its enduring principles of liberty, equality and civic responsibility. Through acts of service, advocacy, leadership and innovation, these individuals embodied the revolutionary spirit and have helped shape their communities. In recognition, Iowa PBS is launching a comprehensive initiative that brings these stories to life through community engagement, broadcast programming, original content and educational resources.
Iowans across the state are invited to explore Revolutionary Iowans, a statewide exhibit created by Iowa PBS in celebration of America's 250th anniversary. With displays in all 99 counties, the project highlights individuals whose leadership and impact reflect the values that continue to define our democracy. By bringing these stories directly into communities across Iowa, the project celebrates the power of local voices and shared history.
In addition, Iowa PBS will air a special lineup of documentaries each Sunday at 1 p.m. through June 2026, showcasing Iowans who have carried forward this revolutionary spirit. From community service and advocacy to innovation and leadership, these programs invite viewers to discover the people and legacies that have helped shape the state.
The initiative also includes new long-form and digital content designed to further explore Iowa’s history and its lasting impact. Two new documentaries will premiere as part of the project: The Legacy of 4-H premieres on April 6 at 8 p.m. and General Dodge and the Transcontinental Railroad will premiere this June. Iowa PBS has also produced a series of digital shorts for the network’s social media accounts highlighting compelling stories from across the state.
In addition to the exhibit and video content, Iowa PBS has also launched Artifact Iowa. This expanded educational effort engages Iowans in exploring history through objects and storytelling, connecting personal and community histories to the broader American experience.
By sharing these stories across platforms and communities statewide, Iowa PBS aims to celebrate Iowa’s role in the nation’s history, inspire civic engagement and strengthen connections among Iowans.
