Iowa PBS offers live coverage of Yankee Doodle Pops

With the Iowa State Capitol in the background, a crowd of people sit on the Capitol lawn looking on at the Des Moines Symphony playing. The Symphony members are in the foreground, facing away from the viewer and toward the conductor who is leading the symphony.

The Des Moines Symphony’s 29th Annual Yankee Doodle Pops returns to the Iowa State Capitol in a statewide broadcast for all Iowans to enjoy. Iowa PBS will provide live coverage of the popular and patriotic performance this July. The Des Moines Symphony’s Yankee Doodle Pops will air live on Monday, July 3 at 8:30 p.m. and will rebroadcast Tuesday, July 4 at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 9 at 1 p.m.

"It is a joy to provide coverage of this Independence Day tradition so all Iowans can enjoy it,” said Iowa PBS Senior Producer and Director Andrea Coyle. “Nothing compares to listening to the Des Moines Symphony perform on our state's Capitol grounds, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over downtown Des Moines!"

Each year, the Des Moines Symphony welcomes more than 100,000 central Iowans to celebrate Independence Day at Yankee Doodle Pops, the largest single-day concert event in Iowa. Music Director and Conductor Joseph Giunta and the musicians of the Des Moines Symphony will perform time-honored patriotic favorites, including the “1812 Overture” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The Des Moines Symphony has partnered with Iowa PBS since 2021 to broadcast the beloved program statewide.

“Over the years, Yankee Doodle Pops has evolved into one of Iowa’s favorite Independence Day traditions. I’m thrilled that this Des Moines Symphony event can bring so many people together and provide so much joy for our community,” said Music Director and Conductor Joseph Giunta.

In addition to its statewide broadcast, Iowa PBS .1 is available to livestream on iowapbs.org/watch, pbs.org/livestream, the PBS App and YouTube TV.
