Iowa Life: Stories That Endure

Iowa Life uncovers powerful stories rooted in resilience, history, and community. From a farm family surviving tragedy to artists stitching a town’s legacy, each story reveals a unique piece of Iowa’s spirit. Whether hiking across state parks, preserving a beloved general store, or celebrating 50 years of campus music, these moments reflect the pride and perseverance that define the state.

Tragedy at Follinglo

Immigrating from Norway in the 1850s, the Tjernagel family settled on a plot of land that would come to be known as Follinglo Farm. For generations, the farm was home to children, families, and livelihoods. That is, until tragedy struck in 1968 when a National Guard plane crashed directly into the farm, killing both pilots. While the Tjernagel family miraculously escaped physical harm, their home and property were reduced to ashes in the wreckage. In the aftermath, the Story City community rallied around the family, providing them with a fully furnished new home. This is a story of resilience, community, and the power of small-town kindness in the face of heartbreak.

Hiking Across the State

In 2021, Kevin Mason, an Iowa native and current history professor, embarked on a mission to visit all 83 state parks in Iowa. As part of his ongoing research into the history of Iowa and its public lands, Kevin set out to document each park on foot, capturing the unique landscapes and stories they hold. Through this journey, he continues to deepen his understanding of the state's past and its connection to the land.

The Last Ben Franklin Store in Iowa

In the late 1800s, the first iteration of the “Ben Franklin” general store was launched by the Butler Brothers. Operating under a franchise model, the chain eventually grew to an estimated 2,500 stores nationwide. However, as the retail landscape evolved, the Ben Franklin stores ultimately filed for bankruptcy. By 2023, the last remaining Ben Franklin store stood in Sheldon, Iowa. Still carrying the iconic name, the shop owners continue to serve their community with pride.
