It's college wrestling from Humboldt, Iowa. It's a big 12 men's match up in the high school gym as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits take on the Iowa State Cyclones. Hello everyone, I'm Tim Johnson, along with my broadcast partner, ten time national champion coach and Hall of Famer Jim Miller. And Jim, we've got a good one today.
Oh man, what a great environment. Intimate atmosphere. It's going to be fun.
Both teams are coming off wins Friday night. So they're hot. They're ready to go. And they come into this with the cyclones only having one loss this year against number two Ohio State. But nothing can take away from the spark that ignited the cyclone season. Iowa State got the ball rolling early, defeating arch rival Iowa in Ames. Their first win over the Hawkeyes since 2004.
To beat Iowa on a Sunday and then fly to Las Vegas the following Wednesday and win Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday was a pretty incredible six day stretch, so we've got a talented bunch of guys and, you know, they were excited for both those opportunities. So a great way to start.
Well that win at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas was the cyclones second win there in the last three seasons. And Jim let's take a look at today's matchups. What do you think.
Well we got some good really good matchups. I really looking forward to number 1 in 197, especially Elam and Berge. Two top six ranked in the nation. But we're going to have some fireworks here starting right away. Roark and Stevo Poulin, are.
[MUSIC] [APPLAUSE]
Got the matchup between Brady Roark and Stevo. Stevo Poulin. Stevo Poulin coming from North Northern Colorado transfer.
Returning All-American last year.
Stevo Poulin grew up outside Albany, New York, and boy did he leave a mark wrestling as a youngster. His dad posted these videos when Stevo was eight years old and they went viral. Maybe you remember I do seeing some of these moves and of course the Mohawk.
The legend.
Fernando Villaescusa and Brent Metcalf. But Derek St. John and.
All right, here we go. 100, 125 pounds Brady Roark. The redshirt sophomore out of Seneca, Missouri. He's a Fargo All-American. Going up against Stevo Poulin out of Ballston Lake, New York, Stevo started at North Carolina State and transferred to northern Colorado, going to spend his last year here at Iowa State. Brady Roark has been paying his dues. He was behind Tanner Jordan. It's his turn. Jim.
Yes it is. And he's a four time finalist, three time state champ. So he's really taken advantage of his opportunity. He's looking for something big. Hopefully for him tonight. But Stevo Poulin returning All-American. And obviously Iowa State wants to get off to a good start.
There's a coaching staff led by hometown boy Kevin Dresser. We're at Humboldt High School, where Kevin was a two time state champion, a member of the Hall of Fame, the Wrestling Hall of Fame and Humboldt High School. There's Steve pulling in on a good single. Comes to his feet real fast.
Nice shot by Poulin. Ready to trip and he does a beautiful job. Three point takedown.
Great execution by Poulin. Gets to a fast start. That's what Kevin Dresser was looking for. Thought that they got somewhat of a slow start Friday night. They shut out Northern Colorado Friday night. Both teams coming off wins.
Neutral. Neutral.
He's seen Poulin when he got that leg up he didn't hesitate. He just went to the straight finish got a quick finish and that's a key. And here he is back in now a high crotch situation cuts off to the double. Just got to drive through. Roark doing a good job trying to stave him off by locking up in the crotch there. And but Poulin trying to step through the legs and come back for a cross face. There. He's close. Roark had pretty good recovery there. Got now got his base hand still locked. Nick will get a stalemate here.
Official Craig Blake out of the Cleveland area. Kent, Ohio is the head official. Jacob Frias out of Milwaukee is a side official. A big 12 rivalry here. South Dakota State, an affiliate member as a wrestling program in the big 12. That's a good job. By Roark holding off. And that second takedown, which looked like a Poulin was going to get now doing his own hand fighting, staying in there tough. And you want to go through that first period. If you could be 3 to 1 and Roark after that fast start by Poulin you'd feel pretty good.
Darn right. What a great environment we got here too, man. It's just old school. There is.
Not a seat. It's standing room only and there are about three deep up against the wall. It is tremendous. Humboldt held their conference championship this yesterday here in this same gym.
What a conference that's been over the years. First Central conference. Yeah.
Boy, the North Central Conference when when I was in high school that was the that was the conference. And double.
A third period.
That's a good look.
At.
Damian Hahn, the two time national champion out of Minnesota in his eighth year as the head coach for South Dakota State. He's a builder, a builder of programs, a builder of facilities. They've got a several multi-million dollar facility that Damian Hahn led the charge and and got for his wrestling program.
[APPLAUSE]
And, well, ruling out.
Yeah, pulling up and out. Roark didn't want to let him go, but he had to let him go after a while on your feet, because to avoid the stall call. 4 to 1.
Both wrestlers doing a nice job of acting. They're being very active.
Roark did get in the first time, and now he's got him upside down.
Poulin in the waterfall position there. What's Roark got to do, Jim?
Well, I think we're I think he's kind of stuck right here. And Poulin now trying to sit around to get his advantage. But Roark doing a good job getting that hand, getting the leg up top. Now he's right back in. But we'll see if anybody can get an advantage. I think we're going to hit another stalemate here.
Brady Roark he has a decision, a decision over Jory Volk in his career. The All-American that was at Wyoming and now is the Gophers starting 125 pounder. He could scrap.
He's scrapping him. He is really scrapping. And now man, these guys are taking turns taking over the advantage. But no one can get get the enough to get the takedown.
Stalemate.
Neutral. Good stalemate there. 34 seconds left. Second period.
Obviously a 100% Partizan crowd. The Iowa State cyclone. A lot of the faithful that don't get to get down to Ames. Oh no kidding. They're from all over this. This country up here, North Central Conference, the Eagle groves, the Clarion's, the Iowa Falls, the Webster City's Fort Dodge, just right down the road. Of course.
I stopped in the gas station here when I got in town. Get some gas. And the first thing. Are you here for the wrestling meet?
They were coming in a couple hours early to get their spot, because you weren't going to be late. There's no more tickets to be sold. Sold out. Packed crowd here in the Humboldt High School gymnasium. We go to third period.
Bottom position. Wait for me.
Roark goes down, down 4 to 1.
Pullins really tough on top. He is made a living. you know, getting those extra points of riding time off him. And he likes to tilt and be tough on top. So this would be a really important for Roark to get out as quick as he can. That would be a big win for him. It's a little battles. It's it's it's the battles inside the battles.
Right Jim. No doubt about it man. So here's the battle right now. Can I control hands and get up. And of course Poulin saying I'm going to control his wrist and keep him down. Right now he's got 35 seconds riding time. And you know, that's the first point. He's trying to get to the minute riding time.
Has that ankle clipped back there with a lot of pressure forward. Yeah.
And look at all the pressure he's putting on Roark really making it hard to get to his feet. He finally gets up 55 seconds riding time. He gets to the minute. neutral 101 riding time.
Hangs on to get that riding time. Now it's 5 to 2. If it was to end like this, the riding time point would be but a a takedown by Roark would.
Basically put him in the.
Lead, put him in the lead, take off a few. So Roark right in this match. Both these guys scrapping. Great way to start this meet here in Humboldt Iowa.
Roark. Nice shot by Poulin again. Roark is kind of like this. Keeping it close with good guys and giving himself a chance to pull it out at the end.
You got to love Poulin aggressiveness from the start. And his defense right there was a nice shot into the leg. Probably going to get another stalemate, but Roark trying to work around.
And basically took off. 20s from the clock there. 28 seconds left.
You have a stall warning.
See if Roark takes a goes after it here.
Poulin with no stall warning. So he's just got to be real smart here, Jim.
Yeah, for sure. Just kind of play in their circle in.
Two tough 125 pounders. A great way to start this meet. If Poulin can hang on.
Nice job by Poulin.
He's looking.
To.
Try to pull in that leg. And he's going to hang on. Good fight there. At 125 the Cyclones put three on the board with a 5 to 2 win by Stevo Poulin against Brady Roark three zero. Cyclones over the Jackrabbits. After the initial weight and the crowd appreciates it.
[APPLAUSE]
Next we go to 133, introducing.
First for the Jackrabbits. It's Cale Seaton and his opponent for the Cyclones of Iowa State, the third ranked Evan Frost.
Our next match up here Evan Frost going up against an Iowan Cale Seaton out of Iowa City high a redshirt freshman city high and Iowa City, Iowa.
Hard nosed wrestler, two time champ. But he's got a big.
Evan Frost has been to this event in Humboldt before and we talked to him in Ames a little over a month ago about it.
Humboldt specifically, we do, I think, a really good job or should I say the fans do a really good job of kind of going in there and, you know, making it really, really loud. You know, we got the flames going. It's just a really, really cool environment that they got going on. And in the in the gym over there. So very exciting to keep going back there every single year. Fans make it fun.
The fans make it fun. They make it fun for everyone. They make it fun for Jim and I, and we're ready at 133. Jim packed with 1500 Cyclones friends from the Humboldt area here Evan Frost All-American from Metairie, Louisiana, finished his high school career at Dowling High School in Des Moines. He and his twin brothers, who will see later Jacob Frost at 149, moved into Iowa and went to Dowling there last year and now are in the cyclone lineup, going up against Cale Seaton had a nice.
Behind by Frost. He's got to get him to the mat.
No control.
Nothing yet. There it is. Nice takedown by Frost.
That's the kind of start that Kevin Dresser is looking for from Frost. He's you get the Frost motor running and it's hard to stop it, but sometimes I got to give it a jump start, he says.
Yeah, he's a slow starter sometimes.
Yeah. So that's a nice start for Evan Frost. He's had some big wins, had some weight management issues. And so as we're getting into this crunch time of the year, it's always good when you get your weight under control and you look and you come out like he just did.
Yeah, I think when he was younger, his weight really was a bigger problem than it is now. I think he's, you know how it is. You just get more mature and you want to, you know, you feel better. You wrestle better when you feel better. Simple as that.
Cale Seaton had a nice tech fall against Cal Baptist on Friday night. Speaking of Cal Baptist, so we've talked about us losing that program, but we'd certainly like to keep it. And if the wrestling fraternity out there gets behind it, that's our that's our intention. If anybody wants to know how they can help keep Cal Baptist wrestling, go to keep CBU Wrestling.com.
Yeah. One of the few programs in California we don't.
Yeah. And California, they have more participants than anyone they've got, you know, over 700 wrestling schools. And they're really a tough state. So it's hard, hard to take when they decide that they shouldn't because it's about participation. You know, it's about opportunity for for young men and women. And that's what I hate the most. When a program, they determine that a school determines not to keep it.
Like you always say, Tim, America needs wrestling.
America does need wrestling. The guts, the gumption, the grit that it takes to grind out a good seven minutes match is the same stuff, the same characteristics that it takes to grind out a good, productive life. And and boy, we need it more than ever in America today. Stalling on on on Evan Frost.
Yeah, both of them have a stall call now.
So both with stall calls. The official Craig Blake saying, Devin, you need to work for the fall on top. And by definition, that's exactly what you're to do. Always try to turn your man.
For sure.
Well, Seaton trying to get to his feet. He does, but gets put right back down by Frost. Frost puts a lot of pressure on you, man. Just check this out all the way down and he's got two minutes, 15 seconds riding time already. It's the first period.
Really stretching Seaton out there make it hard for him underneath. Rode out after a quick takedown.
Crowd appreciates it.
2.5 minutes of riding time for Frost.
Frost.
Got to see more out of both of you on top bottom.
Evan Frost gets the choice and he is going to take down to begin the second period. And this second match at 133 pounds. Tim Johnson, along with Jim Miller bringing you college Wrestling on Iowa PBS.
Green one, green two.
Frost. Getting to his feet gets his escape.
Good hustle by Evan Frost getting to his feet as Jim said. Oh man, good footwork. And then a nice shot right into the single head inside.
Coach loves that you get out. Don't wait. Just come right back. Go get another takedown. And that's what Frost is working on.
Shelving that leg and now pressuring those hips. He comes across, covers the hips. Three more points, goes out front seven zero to the delight of Kevin Dresser. Made a living here in this gymnasium as a two time state champion. Went on wrestled for Dan Gable and NCAA champion. Got a lot of champions on that coaching staff there. Coach Miller.
Yeah, they yeah they do.
Brent Metcalf two time NCAA champion Dan Saint John NCAA champion. One escape for Seaton and Frost working again. Similar position shelf the leg.
Legal.
Looking to step across gets another don't not yet close.
There it is. There's three points. Third takedown.
[APPLAUSE]
For Frost.
Look like he's going. Hey, let's get this technical fall here.
Good. Here.
He's got some time, but he probably needs another takedown this period. Nice shot.
And there's one point for Frost. Another stalling call against Seaton. That's after the warning. You get one point for the next time. It's called Frost. Trying to finish it. Get the three four seconds left. That's the way you do it. That's the way it's drawn up. You draw it up to score late in the period, on the edge of the mats, and Evan Frost.
Here's a here's the next last takedown here.
Wait for me, Red.
So here we go. We got Seaton going down. See if Frost just gets rid of him here and gets after back on his feet. You talk about the assistant coach, Derek Saint John, going into the Glen Brand Hall of Fame. Dan Gable Museum this summer. Metcalf and Dresser already in it.
Then just hanging around the rooms. Three time NCAA champion Nate Carr.
Yeah, there you go.
Nate's the life coach there. And of course continues to be a major part of the team that he led for so many years. And Olympic bronze medalist and of course, David Carr, who helped Kevin Dresser build this program to what it is, is vying to be the USA man in 2028, going to Croatia next week. And I was talking to Nate and he's going to accompany his son on that tournament. International tournament. There's another shot by Evan Frost really, really got it going here. The energy.
Just totally dominating this match 17 to 3. Now one more takedown will be the technical fall. Seaton. Oh nice job by Seaton. He's still in there. Hanging in there wrestling. Ross has been the aggressor the whole match and I know Dresser he's got to really love this from the get go. Getting Evan Frost pulling the trigger. Oh nice shot by Frost. Getting it, getting the leg elevated, shelving it, coming around.
No control.
[APPLAUSE]
Good job. Evan Frost technical fall.
[APPLAUSE]
Three seconds remaining.
[APPLAUSE]
Time for Frost.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Now, Steve, the victory from the state.
Here's Kevin Dresser being awarded his second of two consecutive high school state titles at 126 and 132 pounds, respectively. He then went on to wrestle for Dan Gable at the University of Iowa, where he was 142 pound NCAA champion. Two time All American and Big Ten champion. Kevin Dresser sends out at 141 pounds. Carter Pearson from Iowa State. Normally they have Echemendia, one of the Cuban connection, but he won't be there tonight. He got a little sick and so Carter Pearson steps in for him for Iowa State against Julian Tagg tags ranked. And he's deservedly so. He's tough.
Yeah, he's tough. Transfer from North Carolina. Two time Ohio State champion, Fargo champion 2007. He was cadet world team member. So yeah, he's Lodi, Ohio.
A senior. Had a nice come from behind win versus national qualifier Jesse Vazquez Friday night for Cal Baptist. And so he got it. He was a little slow starting and got the motor running. Came from behind and finished strong to get a win. South Dakota State winning nine out of the ten matches against Cal Baptist and Iowa State, shutting out Northern Colorado in Hilton Coliseum. On Friday night.
I think Pearson's usually 133, so I think he moved up with Echemendia not feeling well. Southeast Polk and they got her going southeast. Polk won the state easily last year, favored to win again Three-a this year.
Julian Tagg, as you said, was a state champion out of Ohio. He's actually a two time for Aim Academy and transferred in to South Dakota State from the University of North Carolina. His brother Gabriel wrestled at South Dakota State, so there was a connection there in on the single leg. Nice little drag to the.
Yeah drag single went really smooth and now he's just got to finish. He's he's in great position here. Just got to move him. He's got to gotta move him. Looking for the trip. There it is. Nice takedown Julian Tagg.
Now Tagg one of those guys. Nobody in the country can look past. He's he's you know he's he's he's tough. He has some good wins over ranked wrestlers. And he's just one that's going to be in there. And it's nothing free when you wrestle. Julian Tagg.
No, that's exactly I had it written down. Don't sleep on Julian Tagg.
And prove.
Tagg first on the board for the Jackrabbits.
Look at this crowd. DJ standing room only at the doors, man.
Yeah, they're they're they're kind of peeking in from the the hallway there. I don't know whether they're peeking in because they can't get in or because they don't want to get too far away from the popcorn. Okay. You and I had it, as you.
Know.
Shane Sparks told me that he has done this, and it's the best popcorn he's ever had. So we went out and pretty darn good, wasn't it? It's great atmosphere here at Humboldt High School and they're sitting in the aisles, sitting on top of each other, almost. First book I ever read about gable heading in it was Gotch to Gable by Mike Chapman, and of course we're going to we're going to see more. We got some features, but Frank Gotch, that's that's where it all started.
It really did.
Yeah. Tribute trophy in this our statue.
Statue by the river and Humboldt man it's a huge statue too. And we feature we feature him in the Dan Gable Museum as well. Pioneer for the state of Iowa. Man, he was a world known worldwide.
Worldwide, worldwide. And you know, back in my day, I mean, these guys were in your day. Well, Humboldt won a state championship. They got the banner up there in 1968. Keith Havens. Was a three time state champion. Mickelson, heavyweight state champion that year. Lyle Laird, three state champions. Jeff Mickelson just got inducted into the Football Hall of Fame at Iowa. He was a captain of the Iowa football team back in the day, and. Of course, Dave Musselman was a three time state champion. Tony Ursuline, two time state champion, the head coach at Purdue and Purdue, visited here in this environment.
Yeah, yeah, I had a guy named Justin Hansen, two time state champ at Wartburg, won a national D3 title.
He's in the Hall of Fame. Here's a neat Hall of Fame that they have started. Coach Chad Beeman and the administration making sure that happens. There's a.
Nice nice attack by Pearson.
Stay legal, stay legal, stay legal.
Tagg really making it hard on him, though. I mean, he's going to probably you squirm a little bit as a coach watching that knee, how it gets twisted. But the tags coming into the advantage here, he can stay in bounds and maybe even hook up a cradle. Steps over that leg trying to.
Stay on the line.
Now he's probably go to the crossface here. Get that arm off the leg. There's the cradle. Possibly. But good job by Pearson. He felt that coming.
Improved. Stalemate. Neutral.
12 seconds left. Second period. I mean, if you. Hey, Julian Tagg. We need a big win here. You know.
Just saw Chris Perry in the background. There's a couple more state or national championships on the Iowa State staff. And Chris Perry won a couple at Oklahoma State. And they're stacked with national champions.
Third.
[APPLAUSE]
Julian Tagg ahead four to nothing. But he's not that far away. You know, he's 21 seconds from riding time and I'm sure he'll get back on his feet here.
Red set, green cover.
Tagg out 4 to 0. Plenty of riding time coming up. Going about 10 seconds away from securing another point. Third period. Minute 45. Left here in the third match 141 pounds Cyclones out to an eight zero lead with a nice win by Stevo Poulin and then a tech fall by Evan Frost.
Coach is telling him to get cut. Him. It's basically 5 to 1 here. Nice shot. Julian Tagg Pearson doing.
That head.
Control.
He's got to get his right arm out. He does. There's the takedown now. 7 to 1, 8 to 1 with writing time. Needs another takedown or a turn. He does have that bottom leg trapped it. No he doesn't. He's off. He's going to have to cut him. There he goes 55 seconds left here.
Action.
Another takedown will secure the major decision. Nice job. Beautiful. Take double straight double man.
That's the kind you show on the videos. And straight in there. Heading to Sturman sternum.
He wants to do it again.
Improve. Neutral.
Give him takedown. Pearson still has the major with writing time.
[LAUGHTER]
Oh, wow. Tagg is on fire here. Nice duck.
That's what he did Friday night. He started slow and then he just turned it on in the third period with a flurry of points, which he is doing right now. Julian Tagg going to get the Jackrabbits on the on the board here. And nice victory. 14 to 3 with riding time. Julian Tagg the jackrabbit out of Ohio. Senior gets a nice win here in this great environment for wrestling.
Courtesy of Julian Tagg.
After being hired in 2017, Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser started working on having a duel in his hometown in December 2021. The first one was held here, delayed a year by Covid, the cyclones beat their first opponent, Purdue, whose coach, Tony Ursuline is another Humboldt native.
Is a junior for the.
State. Tony building a nice program at Purdue.
Ladies and gentlemen.
A couple of finalists in the last three years, Ramos and Blaze Humboldt very, very proud wrestling tradition. Here comes Jacob Frost, twin brother of Evan Junior at 149 pounds, ranked sixth out of Metairie, Louisiana. Colin Dupill redshirt sophomore stepping in from Greeneville, Tennessee. Dupill for the Jackrabbits.
He's got an interesting bio. Two four time, four state titles, two in Virginia, two in Tennessee.
We'll see if Jacob was inspired by his brother's fast start when he got in with that quick takedown early on, rode out for a couple of minutes the entire first period after the first takedown. This is Jacob.
All-American last year. And he's just all around every position. He's really pretty dang good, really good gas tank.
[MUSIC]
Thomas Dineen.
[MUSIC]
Red after red.
Unless you don't want your little brother or your brother out doing you right.
No arm on your side. Correct. He's not boxed, all right? He's not locked.
But neither of us having been twins. You really don't know what that feels like. But it's got to be. It's got to be so much fun in so many ways.
[MUSIC]
Yes.
Jacob Frost taking some shots, but Dupill doing a good job.
Yeah, he's not letting him past his his hands. There. Good, good. Pressure. Frost digging in for that underhook.
Dupill with an underhook.
Controlling Frost wrist there. Good fight by Dupill.
Inside side.
There's a nice to the left. Nice little swing. Single.
Good fake. And then hit. Just hits it. Here he is coming up. And like if you're he's young and you're if you're learning wrestling, this is exactly what you want to do. You don't want to sit still when you're in on a leg. You just keep building.
Had a lot of options there. I mean, as long as he came to his feet, right, Jim came up. He could have caught a cross. He could have done a lot of things. And so it's all because he kept moving, like you pointed out, coach.
And then you get on top. And just now I'm controlling that, throwing the wrist. You're looking there's 25 seconds left in the period. You don't. You want to end up on top. After a takedown.
Get him off.
A lot of pressure there. You can tell when he can't get off your belly.
[MUSIC] [APPLAUSE]
Good period. 3 to 0.
Bottom position.
Second period.
Wrestlers. I need more action than we had in those last 30s.
Right. Damion Hahn. Cody Caldwell to Han's right. You're viewing left. Cody Caldwell I get I get an opportunity every year to talk about morning sun. Now why am I talking about Morning Sun Iowa with Cody Caldwell? Because his grandfather Bill was my coach, golf coach and teacher in high school. And then, of course, Cody's dad, Rick. What a program at Waverly program.
Rick Caldwell and Cody, three time state champ himself in the state of Iowa. And Rick is dead. I don't know eight nine state titles at Waverly-shell Rock.
Yeah, longest tenured coach on the South Dakota State team.
Yeah. That's interesting. Yeah.
He came a year before Damien Hahn. Damien Hahn saw the value of keeping Cody. And it's been a nice marriage ever since. But the Caldwell family heritage for wrestling, one that's known throughout the Midwest.
Jacob Frost another go behind takedown now up seven zero. 40s riding time and building. Oh man. He he wants some back points here.
Improve.
Oh keeps the armbar looking to run it.
Whether he gets it or not man he's taking it out of that is hard on Dupill man. There's a lot of energy spent underneath not going over.
Proud and knowledgeable crowd here. Obviously as we said.
Warning.
I gotta give a shout out from omission. I see some Algona people out in the stands. I didn't say Algona, and so my cousin Jamie Limbaugh. Bruns, that's a Algona name. And she texted me and said, don't forget Algona. You can't forget Algona.
When it comes to.
The North Central Conference. So shout out to all these traditionally proud and tough programs.
Yeah, these towns around here and right now, Clarion's a team.
Yeah.
You know, very good team. I think top ranked team in Two-a. And they got her going right now.
I was watching part of that conference tournament yesterday. And you're right Clarion has it going. There's. Evan Frost out in front going into the third period.
All right. We're going to cover optional start green. Wait for me red.
So Jacob Frost. Jacob Frost my my bad.
Basically eight to nothing with riding time. Basically a major. But he wants to cut him right away and get going. And when you get these Frost kids, when they're on, when they're in and going, they're dangerous.
That's what coach said. We mentioned it. The Frost motor, it's hard to stop. And now he's got that hand tighten going. The feet are going in on that shot again to the left up to his feet really fast. That's the key.
That watch and watch. Looking for the trip. Pulling him on. Got some really savvy here. Limp arms out and there's a takedown.
Really nice there I mean so many wrestlers at all levels get caught after they get a good shot in, but they don't finish, get to their feet as fast as as Jacob Frost.
Jacob Frost having fun right now. Just let him go. I'm going to do it again. Man, that was good. That was a good time getting that single.
[LAUGHTER]
Now he shoots, I shoot, I score, he shoots, I score mentality.
Yeah. In fact you you and I were talking about that and that's the Jesse Mendez from Ohio State man.
No kidding. Of course that's a Dan Gable quote. But man, every year you get different guys that you love to watch no matter who shoots, they got a chance to score and hit right here. It's Jacob Frost.
No control. No control. Keep an.
Eye on. He talked about a man that Kevin Dresser has a lot of respect for. So much of this wouldn't even be happening except for Dan Gable. Of course. You are the director. There's another takedown.
Another takedown. 13 to 2, and he lets him go again. 13 to 3. But like I said, Jacob Frost having fun. He's not stolen it out. He wants another takedown. That's what you love to see. And that's what fans come to watch.
Well. And he's wrestling like he's in the middle of the mat right there. You know they're on the edge. He doesn't care. He's going to pull him back in. Oh that's how you do it right there. Yeah. Crowd loves it.
Jacob Frost wished more time was here. He's going to run out of time, but he just having fun. Four seconds left, 16 to 317 with writing. Writing time.
One short of the tech fall.
And he wants another. He wants four seconds. He wants another takedown.
Here we go.
Get that. Wait for me to come in. Left foot back. Got. One read.
Right. Really nice match. Jacob Frost.
Good energy from the start.
18 to 4.

History impacting 18% of our budget. Despite this challenge, we remain committed to our mission. Thank you for supporting public media and thank you, Iowa PBS for remaining supportive of college wrestling. Get ready now for 157 pounds. Kane Naaktgeboren. Going against Cale Swensen Cale Swensen. One of the Jackrabbits best, most seasoned wrestler, redshirt junior Kane stepping in for us Vinny Zerban, who has not. He's got a he's a little tweaked up and as far as an injury, nothing serious but just can't go today. And so Naaktgeboren Boren is in. He was a state champion for Linn-mar going up against the Jackrabbits 157 pounder Cale Swensen.
Two time national qualifier, for time, place winner Waseda High School in Minnesota. Two time champ, runner up in Junior Greco. But he's from Plymouth, Minnesota.
Yep. Why is that? A high school? One of the powerhouses over the years.
And let's make.
Sure, as you said, two time national qualifier medical redshirt last year. And.
Big opportunity for Kane Naaktgeboren getting a chance to come out wrestling from a really great and a great environment against a really quality opponent.
[MUSIC]
Cain's got a brother, Tate, who's on the Iowa State team, 84 pounder, who's had some, had a surgery this year. Actually. Actually, TJ, Eric and Tina Naaktgeboren mom and dad. I had him in class at Wartburg.
Oh.
Outdoor recreation was our last class of their best. I keep telling her that's the best class on campus. Man, I love that class.
And here's the recap. As we talked, Stevo Poulin came out and had a hard fought, good win at 125. Then Evan Frost with a tech fall over Seaton Julian Tagg puts the Jackrabbits on the board with a major decision and Jacob Frost really nice major decision over Dupill.
Nice shot by Swensen. Naaktgeboren locked chest wrap trying to stave him off. Did a good job of it so far. Swensen in on now upside down.
Watch a figure four as well. He's trying.
Stalemate called. stalemate break. You know we talk about Cale Swensen being seasoned and you talk about, you know, teaching his mom and dad. I suppose that's a category you and I are in seasoned. Are we the seasoned? Announcers in the wrestling community. And so it's a nice I like that. Just saying. The old man.
Yeah. Yeah.
Something you know there's something to be in seasoned and Cale Swensen has been a lot of battles. He's won some. He's won a lot of battles in the past actually has beaten Zerban a couple of times in the past. He beat Zerban in NCAA in two years ago. And so it would have been fun to see the rematch. But not possible today. But I'm sure they will. Big both big in the big 12 tournament coming up. There's a nice shot by Swensen looking to complete it. He's got to get that thigh loose.
Naaktgeboren trying to hold on, but good job. By Swensen.
And good action by Swensen jumped in there, lowered his level.
Matt returned.
Big return.
Okay.
Naaktgeboren right back up to his feet. Be a big escape. If he could get it.
Still great.
Big 21 seconds here in the first period. Right out or escape.
So important from both positions. But to get the escape here is would be big for Naaktgeboren.
Green cover.
Nothing yet.
Green one, green one.
And it is a right out for the first period.
Really tough ride out by Swensen.
40s riding time.
Your choice.
Green Swensen goes down.
Green selects bottom position right. Keep our hands hand ties. Legal guys. Both guys keep your hands tied. Legal. Wait for me, red.
There's a look at Kevin Dresser again. He's been successful everywhere he's been. You know, he was a successful high school coach. Grundy High School in Virginia. And then Christian Christiansburg High School, 30 years in Virginia. He was the head coach at Virginia Tech before he came to Iowa State. 11 years at Virginia Tech, 30 years in Virginia, Hall of Famer out in Virginia. Everybody knows who Kevin Dresser is because of his success.
Yeah, a ton of state high school titles brought home a trophy. Virginia Tech. tough right here so far. Naaktgeboren. Getting high. Impressive.
Yeah. Crowd appreciating the the ride there. Got a he wasn't scared to take a little risk. Got a little high but settled back in talking about Naaktgeboren on top.
And prove. knocking down.
That riding time building his own.
Red one, red two.
It can be an equalizer.
And I tell you, if you're good. Yeah, if you're good on top. Makes such a difference. Keeping you in the match or giving you a chance to, you know, snag some back points. But man, he's riding tough now. He's got almost 50s riding time. And Swensen has not even really been close to getting out and has not got to his feet at all.
[LAUGHTER]
That's a big ride out for Naaktgeboren is going to be 10 seconds left.
Confidence builder kept him in the match. Going to get an opportunity for his choice.
Crowd going to appreciate this right out.
[APPLAUSE]
Where are we going? Red?
Scott. Casper, our celebrity PA announcer out of Des Moines, got one of the premier PA announcers in the wrestling community.
Green cover.
On the mic in the gym this afternoon.
[APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER]
And I got the truck back.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]
Naaktgeboren up to his feet. Be a big escape here.
And prove.
[APPLAUSE]
Didn't quite get out. And now Swensen does have the writing time. Under a minute.
On the belly button. All right, watch your tight waist. Right, right. Set green cover, green one.
Naaktgeboren reaching around for a wizard.
Still green. Ankle run. Stay legal. Still in control.
[APPLAUSE]
Look for locked hands.
There. All tied up in here. I think we're going to get a stalemate. Control or a stall call on Swensen.
Green.
Stop riding.
Stop riding time.
The riding time is stopped for Swensen. Call calling. Called.
Greg! Greg. Greg! Greg. Greg. Stall warning. Green. You got that stall warning. All right. Make sure we don't got a tight waist on the start.
[APPLAUSE]
Wait for me.
[APPLAUSE]
Green.
Here we go. 46 seconds left.
Green. Cover.
No riding time. No riding time will be involved. Swensen cannot get it. And so good fight by Naaktgeboren. He's trying. Good return again by Swensen.
Both these guys so stingy on top.
He's looking for a little tilt here, but Swensen.
Low stay legal. Improve, improve. Read one, read two. Three. Three. Three. Four. No, it is still green. Still green, still green, still green.
Nothing yet. Man, he's going to end up like this.
Yeah, he's got to get that left leg hooked inside. And he wasn't able to do it. Swensen.
We're going to do a full 360 green.
Follow me. Nice win by the jackrabbit. They get their second win of the night. Three more points on the board 12 seven. As we get ready to go to break. Going to break. We have some halftime features with the score 12 to 7. Iowa State leading will be back after this. More wrestling to come from Humboldt High School gym.
[MUSIC]
You're watching.
The state championship.
From our young age. You know, starting to wrestle. When I was six years old and Humboldt, I took to it right away. It was something that I really enjoyed and didn't mind to work.
Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser grew up watching Boys State wrestling coverage, then won back to back titles in high school.
In Des Moines. It's very electric.
I thought right then and there I'm like, I'm going to do whatever it takes to get down to that mat before I graduate. Humboldt High School, there's a lot of kids that had very, very similar thoughts in their head.
Right now. Humboldt can tout another contender inspired by his predecessors.
Him being from Humboldt. It kind of pushes me towards Iowa State and yeah, having a duel here is awesome. You get to see the guys that I mean, you could be teammates with.
Junior Brody. Hendrix has racked up over 100 career match victories and already medaled twice at the state tournament.
Coach Dresser when he's recruiting guys, he really wants to find out if they truly love wrestling.
Coach Chad Beeman has headed up Humboldt boys wrestling for over two decades in seeking another trip to state. He says Hendrix makes the grade.
At the high school level. We might have 5% of our kids that truly love wrestling. He's one of those individuals.
The goals are to win a state title this year and next year, and then move on to my collegiate career, whether that's in football or wrestling.
Hendrix has been an integral part of Humboldt's defense, including their three, a state title run in 2020 for football. Coach Derek Ellmann praises him and other multisport contributors..
Last year. Out of our team that played on the state championship, you know, we had like 16 seniors and of those 16 seniors, I think 13 of them played three or more sports. Success in one sport is definitely going to bring success in another.
Everything I do is based off of wrestling, aggressiveness, using my hands, hips, everything together, tackling. It's all kind of intertwined.
There's no shortage of athletic talent past and present in the area. Coach Elman brought in former Hawkeye and Super Bowl champion Dallas Clark, who graduated high school nearby to help on offense.
There's nothing better than seeing a kid that sees himself as this good, but you see him as this good and they look at you're crazy, right? And then that senior year, they become all state and they're just like, how did that happen? And you're just like, you know, like it's what I've been trying to tell you, you know.
Both football and wrestling have a legacy in Humboldt. Hendrix may have a big decision ahead, but no matter where or how far he goes, homecomings here are sweet. For all.
To be able to connect with the high school, especially my high school. I think it's great for the sport. I think it's great for the kids in northwest Iowa. Growing up there, that was wrestling country.
[MUSIC]
, right?
We're back. We've got more for you here at the break and then more wrestling right after this.
All the great wrestlers of the early part of the 20th century came off farms. They had the work ethic, the toughness. They could pitch hay all day, maybe wrestle with pigs. A lot of them came from Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin. So people say to me, why does Iowa have this great wrestling culture far greater than any of the other states? I said Iowa had Frank Gotch, who grew up on a farm in Humboldt, Iowa, the greatest wrestler, in my estimation, who ever lived.
Author Mike Chapman, a retired award winning Cedar Rapids Gazette sports editor, athlete and creator of college wrestling's Heisman Award, the Dan Hodge Trophy, collects Frank Gotch memorabilia and has written several books on the native island who in 1908 became the first American to seize the title of World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. Comb. As fate would have it, Gotch fell mysteriously ill, dying of kidney failure in 1917. He was just 39 years old.
[MUSIC]
The day he died. It was front page news all over America.
To honor Gotch's memory, a state park was named after him and his statue was constructed overlooking the Des Moines River and Humboldt, his hometown, where he once drew big crowds. When training for matches, Chapman says that kind of fervent fandom is a big reason for the wrestling. We know in Iowa today.
Catch as catch can wrestling was just a little bit too brutal for scholastic activities. So you saw some refinements being made. They wanted to do away with joint lock submissions, put in time limits and referees to make it more acceptable to the public. It was the popularity of Frank Gotch that caused a lot of high schools and colleges to take up the sport. What a legacy. What a legacy.

We're back at Humboldt High School ready for the second half of what's been an exciting dual meet in this incredible crowd. That's a look right there at Marcus. South Dakota State Jackrabbits redshirt sophomore ranked 26 from Woodcross, Utah going up against Connor Euton Junior out of Westerville, Ohio. And so Connor Euton steps in for the Cyclones Cyclones out in front 12 seven. They won three out of the first five and now we get going. Tim Johnson, along with Jim Miller bringing you college wrestling on Iowa PBS and Kevin Dresser hometown gymnasium. That the fifth year that Kevin has brought the cyclones up to his hometown gymnasium, first year they had Purdue with Tony Ursuline, the head coach at Purdue, and they've had Wisconsin and Grandview, North Dakota State, and now the Jackrabbits from South Dakota State, led by Damien Hahn, Damien Hahn has done a tremendous job at South Dakota State, their affiliate members in the big 12. So a big 12 showdown today. Iowa State out in front 12 to 7. And Espinoza-Owens a twin of Moses who you'll see later for the Jackrabbits. We had the Evans twins for the cyclones. And there's Euton in on.
A in on a good shot single comes up with it, tries to snap him down. Espinoza Owens still with the Wizard, but here we go again. Iowa State trying to elevate. Can't stop there. There he goes. And that's exactly what happens again man there. That's not an accident. Those number of Iowa State. You've seen the same techniques there.
Don't get they don't get caught down in the shin Whizzer because they keep moving. They shelf the the leg. And then Euton got out in front was able to pressure the hips, came up on top for an early three point takedown for the cyclone.
Both these guys are hard nosed. They're goers. They wrestle hard. Looking forward to this match here. Been looking forward to it. But 3 to 0 Euton first period.
Newton out of the Columbus, Ohio area. Westerville North High School pretty conventional wrestler. Coach Dresser says he's really focused on the fundamentals. Has had some injuries he's had to get over and he's starting to hit his stride.
Got a locked hands on Euton, though. 3 to 1 now.
So 3 to 1 from that locked hands. Technical violation.
Is.
Good job by Espinosa Owens.
And he's out.
Got those elbows in. Controlled the hands. Got the escape 3 to 2. Now. South Dakota State has come to scrap. Iowa State has been throwing a lot of punches. And the Jackrabbits have responded, winning two of the 3 or 2 of the five matches and showing up here.
Nice job. Ankle pick.
[APPLAUSE]
Yeah. Good engagement.
By Espinosa Owens.
Nice trip. Euton another nice takedown again.
You were talking about the activity that came from footwork activity. Staying on.
[APPLAUSE]
It.
Connor Euton out in front 6 to 2. Now.
[APPLAUSE]
Check this. Here it is. Nice. He'll pick. Scramble. Owens trying to turn away, but you can see he just comes up with the leg. Trips finishes.
Green set, red cover. Green caution first. Caution. Got a.
First caution. You get two for free. The third one. Castillo point.
Green set, red cover.
Espinoza-Owens Owens trying to get to his feet. And he does.
Good movement by Owens.
Wow, great.
You know, pursuit by Euton.
Euton just not letting him. I'm writing you out. That's just determination right there. Great. Right out.
Kind of made up for that technical violation in the lock hands by not letting him go.
Green, you have a caution. Red set.
Euton will start underneath Espinosa. Owens comes on.
Good job. By Euton. Right to his feet. And there's his escape.
Coach Hahn calls Espinoza-Owens his Sherman tank. He says he'll keep coming at you. He'll run over you if he can. Oh, nice job of controlling the head and dropping back into a re-attack counterattack by Espinosa Owens. Love that. Looking to pop that head out.
Steps over the ankle.
Yes he does now.
He gets the leg off underneath his head. He needs to get his head on top, which he does. Pulls his elbow. That was a great job. Now he needs to come back and crossface. He's trying to work his way to the head. He's got Euton in trouble. Just little by little here and there. It is.
A lot of ways he could go. He could get to the. The danger zone.
Euton. Good job not giving that up. And they're going to end up off the mat. Wow.
Fight comes to nothing. There.
Good work. Both guys had good work there. But avoids the takedown.
I've watched Damion Hahn. They had a big win over Minnesota earlier. Big rivalry. He's back home. Two time NCAA champion for Minnesota and he's just a very encouraging in the corner. He's very encouraging coach. And as we talked about it he's built a nice program at South Dakota State. He would like to have them in a position where they could be perennial. Top ten, top 15, always in there, you know, looking to finish in the top echelon of the big 12, he says. I got along, we got a long ways to go, but that's our that's our goal.
Yeah.
That's a big deal. When you beat Minnesota and you know that kind of rivalry.
And it came down to heavyweight. They won a big match at heavyweight late. And man that was some celebration going on there with the Jackrabbits. Well deserved.
I know you've been in that situation, but there were some disappointing losses. He had early and a coach could get down. But it's you know he was right back into the next match and I thought about it as he won at the end. He could have got down because he had a favored wrestler lose late, but you got to just come right back and get after it don't you.
You do. You got you got to show leadership. Because if the leader's not thinking we can win, pretty tough to win.
So you got to fake it till you make it. Is that right?
Sometimes I don't know, maybe you're not. If you do it enough, you're not faking it.
Yeah. You believe?
Yeah.
Read one.
Espinoza-Owens. Nice job. Gets the. Gets the escape.
SDSU.
Third period. About a minute and a half left. Nice shot by Espinosa, but Euton big hips, big. Oh, man. He's got some power. Just hipped out of that shot. And now really putting the onus on Espinosa. Owens of, you know, he's sitting there down seven, three. Also. Euton has writing time.
He does a really nice job. I like the effort. By Espinoza-Owens, but Euton just really feeling that anchors down the down block really effective. Has Espinosa Owens stretched out and we have a stalemate.
You know and another takedown by Euton. You know you're looking at major decision here. He's already got writing time. And these guys are both quick Euton nice job in on the leg.
Found that.
Takedown.
Yeah. Another takedown. Got the major decision now for the cyclone.
You have to write him out to get it.
Been real workmanlike for Connor Euton. He's had to work hard against Marcus Espinoza-Owens and he's had a lot of success working on a major. Now. Like you said, there's Espinosa Owens trying to save a point for his team. You get a major, it's for a regular decision. Is three Coach Dresser.
15 second go. You've done it 100 times in practice, you know. And now see what what can happen here. You got time. If you go, oh, there's a shot. But doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Good fight there at the end by Espinosa Owens. But good win for the cyclone. Three more points on the board puts the cyclones out front 15 to 7. It's a good start to the second half.
You're winning for Iowa State.
[APPLAUSE]
We talked about Damien Hahn. Here's a look back to 2003. South Dakota State coached Damien Hahn, wrestled for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and took on the Hawkeyes in Iowa City on statewide Iowa PBS.
Oh, he's so he was really good.
Oh, man, I love calling. I was calling that meet. I was at that meet and there's Damien. Hard, right? Damien Hahn right now. Now one of.
The Cyclones.
Solid coaches in Division one.
MJ Gaitan.
Now we got Moses Espinoza-Owens going up against M.J. Gaitan and talk about a scrambler. Gaitan a junior nine and two out of Temecula, California, going up against the sophomore out of Woods Cross, Utah. Moses Espinoza-Owens.
Oh, yeah. MJ Gaitan. He's fun to watch. Looking to pin you. Dangerous. Usually comes out on top in the scrambles, but Espinoza-Owens here will put a lot of pressure on him. He's a he's a goer.
When he's focused. Coach Dresser said Gaitan. He's really good.
Jim Miller on.
The good dual win versus Kennedy when they wrestled Iowa City.
Oh, that was huge win for.
Iowa in in Ames. He was second at the Cliff keen. Likes to just get himself in wrestling position. He feels really good when he's wrestling his way. And that's that's a scrambling chaotic way of wrestling. But he seems to find a lot of opponents backs to the mat.
Yeah, I think he has a lot of joy doing, just going, being free and just being wide open.
Moses having a solid year. He's got a victory in his career over Cam Steed from Missouri and All-American. Had a win over Bo Montanana, who is highly ranked for Michigan. He also lost to Matt Luna at the Cliff keen. So they split. And over the weekend in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Action.
Good scrap here. Dead even.
Good.
Marcus or Moses Espinoza-Owens putting some pressure on, you know, keeping the head pressure, staying out on the elbows and and staying solid. Putting pressure on Gaitan.
For a minute.
Yeah, we're dead. Even two minutes in. Gaitan doing some good fakes, changing levels. Just haven't pulled the trigger.
Fans are so close here. When they get a little. If one decides to get loud, everybody hears. It's a tremendous crowd here at Humboldt High School. What a what a really cool venue. Cool opportunity. There's a shot. Little single leg head to the outside looking to try to cut off. But here is where Gaitan will make you pay.
Yeah, he's locking in there. Makes it hard to get to the double. Tries to roll him through. Oh and then oh man, this is a scrap here. Espinoza-Owens trying to cut to the double, but time runs out.
Zero zero at the first period, 174 pounds.
Position. Wait for me. Green. Second period. Red.
[LAUGHTER]
Set. Green cover.
Little rollout by Gaitan for an escape.
First point of the match California.
First on the board with one point.
It seemed like that kind of surprised. Spinoza Owens. That seemed like it was a little easy for Gaitan to come out. Was he.?
Sure did. But look at Gaitan. He finally takes the shot off. Off the fake.
Oh, does he get in tight, Jim?
Let's see if he can come up. Espinoza-Owens trying to spin around.
Nice little hip heist over. The crowd who watches the Cyclones. They'd be disappointed if they didn't see, you know, a little chaos like this with MJ Gaitan.
Yeah. Broke his grip.
Here.
Oh, man. Both these guys, they're not giving up anything.
You stay there, you stay there.
I good in on that chest wrap. Trying to put his knee there so he can try to go around. Oh, he. Chest wrap pulls him over. Nothing happening though. Still neutral. You know what? There's a lot of good wrestling going on. Just not much scoring.
[APPLAUSE]
I was waiting, I wanted to see if I could read the Coach Dresser lips there because he wanted Gaitan attention. But Gaitan focused, walks back to the mat. That's one thing, to talk about it at another time. But you know, the better the the wrestlers are at peeking over at the coach to see if they have something to say.
This time gets in on the double. Lifts him upside down. Euton rolls him through. Oh, he's good here. Time runs out, time runs out, man. Still nothing. One zero.
Both wrestlers at the end of matches. Both have had opportunities to have something happen in their favor. But the time ran out. Now Espinosa Owens will start underneath. Try to even up the score going into the third period. One zero Gaitan with that pretty easy escape as he rolled out early in the second period. Now on top.
Espinoza-Owens once cross Utah.
He's got the hands.
Squares up, gets his escape right back on the shot.
Trying to cut across you. See the left elbow of Gaitan keeping him from cutting off to the double.
Gaitan likes this roll through situation and he sometimes come up on top and score.
Yeah, we're a danger neutral.
And there it is. He's good there.
Got the three.3. takedown out in front 4 to 1 a little over a minute left in a position right here. Splits the legs. Not a position that Espinoza-Owens wants to be in.
[LAUGHTER]
Both wrestlers improve here.
[LAUGHTER]
Both wrestlers improve.
[APPLAUSE]
Damion Hahn felt like they should have been a stalemate. They're both a little start over. That's what I'd be wishing for if I was in his seat. Now you got to move. Espinosa. Owens?
Yeah. Gaitan just. Just getting to the minute. Riding time.
[APPLAUSE]
Doing a really good job on top. Controlling the action.
Yeah, using the whole body. Talked about that pressure. Keeping a lot of pressure forward when he can. Into the lap. Back on top.
Really good job.
Here. Finish these last three seconds. Clean guys. Finish it clean.
Espinosa Owens. Pretty stingy until this last minute. And brought a little frustration out of Gaitan. Gaitan in good shape here with three seconds left. Going to win a tight one.
[APPLAUSE]
One.
[APPLAUSE]
Red and the cyclone.
[APPLAUSE]
score five one with riding time. Three more points on the board. Here's your winner. The appreciation from the Humboldt Gymnasium crowd.
Here we go. Here's the roll through. Gaitan really loves doing this. He'll roll through, then he'll get his hips up and end up in a scramble, but end up in a scramble, winning the score.
Jack.
Here we go.
So here's a look at Brock Fettig.
Please welcome Brock Fettig.
He's a redshirt junior ten nine record out of Bismarck, North Dakota going up against Isaac Dean, ranked number 12 out of Medford, new Jersey. This is a rematch from last year when Isaac Dean was at rider. Brock Fettig has a win just a little over a year ago. 4 to 1 sudden victory win over Dean in a dual meet Bismarck. We know a couple of twins that pretty tough out of Bismarck, North Dakota and Terry Steiner the women's USA wrestling freestyle coach, just went into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. You're the director, Jim, of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo. And it's the 50 year reunion we're going to have.
Nah, dude, 50 years, 50 great years.
You know, if you. Yeah, if you haven't been to Stillwater, go to the last weekend of June to Stillwater, Oklahoma for that 50th celebration. It is going to be special. So if you've never been to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater or Waterloo, you have to visit those places filled with heritage and and just such a celebration of the sport. But that last week or that first weekend in June in Stillwater, they're going to have a special celebration. And it's it's something any wrestling fan should mark their calendars. And there ever a time that Stillwater isn't still it's then.
Yeah. Well, you walk into either Hall of Fame and it's you get lifted up just walking in, seeing the images of all the champions, men and women.
Love having you as the director there. You know, ten national championships at Wartburg, one of the great coaches of all time. And then now you're refired as the director at the Dan Gable Museum. Wonderful. And there's Fettig Fettig.
Dude, that was a great takedown.
Did they give takedown?
It's a replay. We got got his leg up. Nice trip.
Oh, that looks like a takedown to me. But he didn't give it. They're going to they're going to review it. You know. Who are we. There's Derek Saint John NCAA champion for Iowa on the staff looking at Isaac Dean. One of his guys Isaac Dean is fitting well here on has his senior year transferring from rider getting the opportunity to wrestle in arenas like Hilton. Places like this. And I'm sure that he feels very blessed to be in this situation. But right now they're looking at what they called no takedown.
Yeah, Dean is extremely hard to take down.
Yeah.
So the Fettig can get this takedown. That's a huge.
Statue. And park downtown.
Way to start.
Your picture taken with history. Grant. Gotcha.
There they are reviewing their call, and they have to decide whether they're going to overturn their own call. And there's really nothing wrong with that. If they see it now in slow motion and feel like, hey, maybe we missed it.
Yeah.
And I always respect the officials if they do that and if they decide, nope, we got it right, then we move on. Cyclone fans here would like to see him remain the way it was. It was called no takedown, but Jackrabbits Fettig went in, got in on a single leg. There, taking a look at our feed.
One second of riding time for green. Okay, listen. In the call of the mat is going to be changed to three. Green takedown and he's going to get one additional second of riding time before we went out of bounds.
So we're going to have a takedown.
Yes they they overturn their own call. They hand the brick back to Damian Hahn. It was a successful brick thrown by Coach Hahn. They took a look. He got the takedown with some riding time. Yeah that was nice execution. And Dean hardly ever gets taken down. He's. Maybe if there was a defensive wrestler of the year. Is Dean this? He is so hard to take down now to find his own offense. That's another challenge for him. You know it's not easy to teach after years of habits, coach said. But you got to get offensive. And that's not been, you know, his forte. But his defensive ability has been. So that's a big time takedown by Fettig to start the match 3 to 1. Now with the escape.
And that's it. You know Fettig who has beaten him before last year even though hey your guy comes in, he's the number 12 ranked guy in the nation. You know you you know you got ability to do it. And he's wrestling like it had 3 to 1. And South Dakota State they want to get back in this match. They're down 18 to 7 team wise.
It's been the kind of match meet that we thought it was. You're always going to get the fight from the Jackrabbits and Iowa State's very good. They've come out a couple of their starters out Echemendia not wrestling at 141. And then Vinny Zerban was not at 157.
Takedown.
This is where you have to think about it's a dual meet. It's about winning. Now all of a sudden Fettig it took him sudden victory to get the only takedown he got in the last match with Dean just a year ago. So now you get the early takedown and does it change your strategy? Jim, when you know that you have a defensive opponent that doesn't have a lot of offense.
Yeah, but you want him to stay on the attack when he can get in on a good attack. Don't hold out. Hey, it's 3 to 1. We got we got four minutes left. You know we got over half the match left. Don't shut down here.
An escape makes it 3 to 2. It certainly does force the issue for Isaac Dean.
Dean being a little more offensive.
Nice slide by attempt.
A couple single attempts.
Love the shot.
And I'm sure Coach Dresser and the staff and say, hey, some point you're going to be behind. You know that's not a I mean, it's just inevitable sometimes. Now what are we going to do about it? And you can and that's probably what he's been working on.
Great opportunity right here. Again it is a dual meet. It's not the it's not the tournament.
There. You seeing a nice shot by Fettig. But the big hips and power of Dean. When we say he's hard to take down that's part of it man. I mean he's really good people all year has gotten in but but has really struggled to finish on him. Another nice shot.
Really nice. Hey this is when they'll remember this.
[APPLAUSE]
And Coach Coach Dresser says hey, when he finds his offense he's going to be hard to beat. And it's January 25th.
Here it is. He shot a couple times earlier, but this time he snags the leg, comes up right away, hits his trip, shoots in on the edge. Boom.
And I'll tell you, coach Dresser said it's not easy to teach after years of habits, but I think just shows you that Isaac Dean is wide open. Trust his coaches, trust his offense, and not a bad time to find it late in January.
Yeah, this is the one. You come after the match. That's what we're talking about right there, baby. Here we go. Now, 5 to 4. Dean.
Dean will be down to start the third period. It's going to come down to a takedown.
Green choice. Third.
And 5/4. Tagg one.
[APPLAUSE]
Green set, red cover.
Fettig on the underneath. Escape will tie it up.
We're all tied up. The only difference right now between their last match a year ago when Dean was with rider as it was no takedowns, all regulation this time there's five points apiece put up each, have a takedown, and more likely than not, a takedown is going to make the difference. Whether it's in the next minute and a half or two more in sudden victory.
Nice shot by Dean. Same shot.
You know that. He's been he's had some reps in the room with that one coach.
And he's got to it twice. It's the second one this time Fettig does the splits. Fights off. He's trying to fight off the single. So far he has. He's on the he's on the floor.
Yep. You got to stop it. When the it's on the floor. His knee was on the floor. And they called stalling for fleeing there or stalling on Fettig. But I think the the brick that was thrown by the coaching staff is a good one, especially at 184 pounds. Also, did he have that ankle before the any part of Fettig went off onto the gym floor? And I think there's a case to be made. I think there's a case to be made that he had that ankle and that that might be overturned as well.
Sports.
That's a second. Nice single shot that Dean got in on and was scored on one. And we'll see if this one this counts a score or not.
Yeah. If you're the cycling coach you gotta be pretty excited. If you know as you see pieces come together and already a really good team, a team that could there's not a weight class that they have that couldn't be on the podium. And so Dean, who's already tough to beat, get an offense going because that outside two to his left that outside single pretty lethal there. He he got to a pretty easy a couple of times.
Yeah. Early in the match he shot it. But it wasn't. He didn't penetrate right these last two. He was right there. And then immediately elevates.
Right to the feet.
Gives himself a chance to score.
Talk about 184. Holy cow. What a 184. You got Sinclair from Missouri. You got McInally from Minnesota. Number one right now is Rocco Welsh out of Penn State. He's undefeated.
And Ferrari from.
Out of no takedown is upheld. However, the call is being changed because we're out of bounds at 115 rather than 113. So Iowa State will retain their brick. We are taking off the stalling against green and going action out of bounds.
So they uphold no takedown and they take away the stall call on Fettig because he went out of bounds before they called the stall call.
And so they give the brick back.
It's every. Yeah.
Here you go. The replay here.
Watch. Now watch the left doesn't get it right here but right there he does really nice job of hooking in that ankle. And I think that it could have been called a takedown. But they did not. They uphold no takedown.
In change of when we went out of bounds. It went from 112 to out of bounds on the gym floor. At 115 the stall call is taken away to an action call. We are still neutral. Neither wrestler has a stalling warning.
Yeah, the crowd doesn't like that one. Jim.
Hey.
They're into it. It's a very, very knowledgeable crowd from old to young. Everybody has grown up. You're born into wrestling. When you're in Humboldt, Iowa and the surrounding areas.
Well, now we're here we are a minute left, third period, 5 to 5 dead. Even. Both. Both guys have had a takedown, but Dean.
Dean's not wondering anymore if he can.
Yeah, he knows he can get.
To it. Dean trying to keep the cyclone streak going since halftime. 165 174 victories for the cyclones. They're out front 18 to 7. Hard fought duel with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits where there's that single gets in again coming out the outside.
Oh 45 seconds left.
Dean trying to set his leg out. Or he does.
He does. He comes around. Whoa. It's almost a fall.
Fettig gets the leg scramble. Oh, now he's big scramble here. Oh, no. Defensive points. Fettig hanging on for dear life here. And time runs out.
We go to sudden victory.
[APPLAUSE]
Now's a good scramble by Fettig to save the takedown.
Three shots that. Dean has gotten to the leg.
The last three shots in a row. And they're Fettig takes one. Nothing doing. Oh nice shot.
Really great effort by Dean. Talk about.
Kind of a misdirection.
A change.
He steps over.
Very offensive. He's trying to get that right arm through.
Fettig locking up. He does get his hand through. Fettig trying to come up on top and leg, but nothing.
Gets the three. Dineen easy. Dean.
He earned it. He earned.
He earned it.
[APPLAUSE]
The. Isaac Dean has to be real excited, but not as excited, perhaps, as his coaches are for the way he came back. Put that offense together. The crowd loves it. Big win for the cyclone.
97.
Here it is. Here's the here's the scramble here. And that's the end. Overtime takedown. Good effort. By Fettig. But Dean was just a little too much at the end.
Swensen Bennett Berge.
Looking forward to this one.
197 From Kansas City, Missouri.
So Bennett Berge. Cyclones All-American. First freshman All-American and history of South Dakota State. And here comes Rocky Elam transfer from Missouri. A four time All-American, ranked number two going up against the fifth ranked Bennett Berge. The match of the night. This is the kind of match that could be a quarter semifinal in the NCAA.
For sure.
They're going to meet first, though. When it comes to the the big 12. Rocky Elam of Kansas City, Missouri State High School, Brant Berge. Mantorville Minnesota. Redshirt junior is a five time state champion.
Shot by Elam right off the gate.
Drives in for the takedown.
Rocky Elam. Coach said man, this guy is the real deal. And he has been all year.
Green set.
Man. His long arms.
He's undone by nothing. I'll tell you. He's been. He's seen it all. Rocky Elam. He is unfazed. Probably the best wrestler on the team. Red won three surgeries, overcome a lot of adversity. Issue with his back and his knee. Like I said, a four time All-American at Missouri had another year of eligibility. The last of the Covid year. Guys. Medical redshirt last year. He did not wrestle at the second half of the season last year due to injury.
Red cover.
You know, one thing I noticed, Jim, he's always matched or bettered his NCAA seed. Wow has always matched or better. His NCAA seed in his for All-American.
Red one, red two.
Pretty amazing to be a four time All-American now. Hey, you got another chance. You got another shot at it?
Yeah. You know what? He's not wanting anything except the top of the podium. And that would be big for the cyclones. He's been at the top of the podium in everything. Two time state champion, big 12 champ, a mac champ, Mac conference champ, junior world champ. But I think he almost traded all for an.
NCAA title. I'm not kidding.
Green set, red cover.
His brother Zach was a heavyweight two time All-American teammate of his at Missouri.
Red would.
Berge his brother Brady, is an assistant coach, the head coach of the RTC, the regional training center. He wrestled for Penn State. His two time national qualifier.
You know Berge he went up a weight. He was 84. Goes up to 97. Coach said really thinks it was a good move. 2024 All-American at 84.
Got a world silver and U20s. He actually excels more at freestyle. You have people like Tanner Sloan in the in the in the room for a few. You know, first your first few years, you're going to get better. Tanner Sloan.
A couple time All-American.
For South Dakota State. Red one.
Red two.
Talk about a guy hard to get away from. That's Rocky Elam.
Both these guys have shown a lot of moxie in their career. Both have been back. Good successful backside Berge to when he got fourth. He won six in a row to get back on the backside. And Elam has had to do the same thing. Neither of them would choose to be there, but if you're there, that's where the guts and gumption and grit comes in.
Yeah, it is, man. Mad respect guys that can do that. That's a one of the one time, you know, match at a time match. Here's the next, next one.
The next one. Yeah. And usually they're real close. You know it's not unheard of that those kind of streaks you win one overtime after another overtime.
Stall warning. Red work for turns and falls.
[APPLAUSE]
Turns and falls.
Gets a. Stall call. He's got two minutes and 14 seconds riding time. 38 seconds left in the first.
Set. Red cover.
On top of this one.
Red won.
Two of the best in the country. Number two versus number five at 197. Right here in the Humboldt High School gymnasium in Humboldt, Iowa. red one hometown of the head coach, Kevin Dresser of Iowa State.
Red.
[APPLAUSE]
Green. Red. Cover.
Got to go to practice the other night. Watch Kevin Dresser. You know, hold court, run the practice, inspire his wrestlers for a couple of hours.
Move out. Come on.
He got a right out first period. Man, that's a long ride. Out. Two minutes and 49 seconds. Right out in the first period.
Green. The first choice. The third. Red flags. Bottom guys. Bring it in.
Berge deferred and ready. Rocky Elam chooses down to begin the second period.
Red set, green cover.
Elam up to his feet. Berge his hands locked. Looks like Elam going to get his escape. There it is. Four zero.
[MUSIC]
With a whole bunch of riding time for Elam. Berge needs a he needs to sneak in a takedown. Get back in this. Not a great shot by Elam, but he's so long, he's still trying to pull that leg in. Even though it looked like he's out of position.
Both these guys, all Elam for Fettig or Berge one is a freshman. There's another shot by Elam. He really draws that in tight, man. He he shot from kind of far away. But there's Berge sitting around trying to sit the corner.
Watch the line.
What a.
Good job trying to get that leg over his head, not allow. And you don't want your your leg to be straight.
Okay.
If you're Berge. And they're out of bounds. Good effort there. By Berge he just get a there's a little blood. You know, you just get the sense. And I said it Rocky Elam is undone by nothing. He's been in every situation. You know in the NCAA four times big time matches with when he was with Missouri junior World Championships. This environment here is a new environment and one could get nervous, intimidated by it. This the the the the crowd is on top of you. But he's he's unfazed.
He is unfazed. And even every, every, every time there's a break, he just casually walking back to the middle, you know, taking his time. And then when the whistle blows, boom, he's on.
It.
All right. Ready?
To wrestle in the second period.
Ready. You got a caution and a stall warning.
Here.
34 seconds left. Second period.
[MUSIC]
45 for three. Four for four.
And both these wrestlers? About a month and a half time. About six weeks from now, they'll be wrestling in the big 12 at Tulsa. Sure, they'll be seeing each other. Good opportunity that they'll probably see each other in the big 12. They'll see each other at the NCAA.
Do you have.
A caution? Every match counts. Every point counts. Right now, the points favor Rocky Elam.
Yes they do.
The number two ranked 197 pounder.
Berge Berge takes neutral. And why wouldn't you? You've been rode hard. Elam is so good on top. Your best chance is to snag a takedown here. Get yourself back in it.
What about the storm in there? Is he digging.
In?
Okay, keep the tie's clean. Ties clean.
Here's a shot by Berge.
Oh, really? Nice job of evading. And the home crowd. The coaches from Iowa State want a stalling for Berge trying to get out of the bounds.
And they get it.
And everybody accomplished their goal right there. Because Berge didn't get taken down. Yeah, but he did get the stall warning.
You notice how Elam arms are so long when he puts his arm on the shoulders? You're so far away from his legs and oh, shot by Berge and Elam really just kind of re-attack there. Almost scores.
When those hips drop for Elam. It's incredible speed, technique. Really nice job by Elam. He just has the feel. Just a little earlier, Berge was in on a close shot and I was also.
Look at Elam arms. Push him away.
He's strong too. I mean he used he used his arms to lift up Berge and make sure he didn't get any tighter. So you got the quickness, you got the strength, you got the savvy. You got everything going for you as Rocky Elam protecting A40 lead with 15 seconds left.
Seconds.
Berge trying everything he can to get through the head hands defense. He's just not going to happen tonight.
Red one.
Green gets to the leg, but time's going to run out.
And a nice victory. The crowd appreciates.
The one. The final score here at 90.
Their first look at Rocky here and Humboldt Rocky appreciates them. And.
Cyclones Iowa State.
So a win for Rocky Elam three more points on the board 21 to 7 as we head into 285.
Next up, ladies and gentlemen.
That was impressive.
Iowa State has three native Cubans on its roster Anthony Echemendia Yonger Bastida and Osmany Diversent Echemendia and Bastida, who won big 12 titles in 2024, trained together from ages 9 to 18 and recreated a childhood photo as Cyclones. That's really cool. That's cool. We didn't get to see Anthony and he has really improved. He's going to be trouble this year. Anthony Echemendia and then talk about the number one ranked heavyweight 285 in America. Yonger Bastida had to sit out last year because of injury. Goes up against ranked Luke Rasmussen always Gaynor Luke Rasmussen had a big win in the Minnesota meet for the win that South Dakota had over Minnesota. Rasmussen, a junior, ranked number 24 out of Brookings, South Dakota.
He's not your typical heavyweight Rasmussen. I mean, he needs to get on top. He's really good on top. But Bastida is so good on his feet. That might be a tough chore.
How good is he on his feet? I mean, with the number he's probably had in his career, over 100 takedowns and that just doesn't happen as a heavyweight.
Well, we're going to see some right here. I think. Nice shot by Rasmussen. Oh beautiful job. Rasmussen going for it and gets it. He gets it down.
Whoa. That's what I said. Those Jackrabbits came to.
Came to wrestle.
Came to wrestle, and big takedown gets the number one ranked wrestler in his class. Luke Rasmussen.
He's one of those guys that you can't. You can't take it for granted.
Oh.
Now the crowd just said whatever money we just paid, that was worth it.
Holy cow. You talk about explosive.
You know, I don't know what you want to make younger mad. Poor day for trading two takedowns early in this first period of the last match of the day. Here's younger in on an ankle pick. Drive through another takedown.
And he said let's do this more.
Yeah, we're gonna we're going to make sure you know that was a mistake. That's his intention. But Luke Rasmussen, he's tough. He's going to make some noise right there. The junior.
Yeah. He was a two time state champ. South Dakota third in the big 12.
Younger. An All-American in 23. Already showed us a couple of his shots. He has shots from both sides and his ability to lift was already shown to the entire crowd. To their delight.
One out of danger.
Another three.
Another takedown. 10 to 5. With only two minutes into the match and we have had some fireworks. Started out with Luke Rasmussen surprising Bastida with a nice takedown and Bastida answering with three more takedowns.
Here's Rasmussen takedown. Nice job.
Drove through the hips really nice and then found that far knee but oh there's the answer. Yes sir. That is an answer.
And here he goes. Snap down. Go behind. Just like that 13 to 6. Let's try that again.
I saw him look over at Coach Dresser and said Coach Dresser said okay, just keep him down. But see, he says no, I want another.
I'm having fun out here. 23 seconds left in the first.
How much fun as a coach to have 285 pounder like Yonger Bastida. Wrestles like a 174 pounder.
Well, you know, you always want a good closer to having the best guy, the number one ranked guy in the nation. Your last match. That's always nice to have that in a in your back pocket.
Bastida part of the Cuban early in his life. Their their national program. Not a lot of folkstyle reps. And so he can get her done on on the feet. But that's where he's going to stay because he can dominate.
Yeah, he's came into his own this year big time. He's gotten better every year, but this year he's just really solid. And almost every aspect he doesn't like, he doesn't like to ride ride much but doesn't hasn't had to. Control another takedown by Bastida.
Just lowered his level, attacked the hips, went around like Luke. Luke Rasmussen a couple times. Qualifier, redshirt junior actually has a victory over Lance Runyon last year. NCAA and Lance Runyon's, the strength coach now.
Yes he is. And Iowa State.
At Iowa State for the cyclones.
After a.
Great career at Uni and Doug Schwab wonderful young man who is now in charge of the strength training coaching these guys in this area of their life.
Now.
Under a minute. Now, the second. Also reminding.
[LAUGHTER]
That after college wrestling is the state high school boys and girls.
30s left second period 16 to 8 Yonger Bastida. Nice single by Bastida. Control to get his head out. He's close.
But.
Three.
There it is. Right at the end of the period.
And for the second.
Third, third.
19 eight. The score.
I got a feeling Yonger Bastida going to be taking a lot of pictures. He's signing autographs after this meet.
What do you got? Green top. Green. Take top green. You have a stall warning. Okay. Wait for me. Green.
What did you say? Wrestling fans make a little noise for these boys out here today? Putting on a show.
[APPLAUSE]
Here's where Rasmussen Rasmussen wanted to be in the match on top.
Rasmussen tough on top.
He likes that claw ride, but Bastida.
Locked underneath.
Janssen gets penalized for locked hands.
Lock hands by Rasmussen.
20 to 8.
That cover.
Bastida right up to his feet. Rasmussen throws the leg in. On the crab ride. Right. This is where he wants. He likes this. He's comfortable here.
Keep an eye.
On the hand.
Doing a good job. Bastida getting better. Getting a little bit better. Position. Nice job. By Bastida.
Control.
[APPLAUSE]
Still green.
And let's sit out now into the takedown scenario 22 to 8. That was a reversal. So we're talking 14 point lead. Bastida going to go neutral.
22 to 9. Another takedown will finish it off.
And a technical violation.
One minute left on the clock right at time. Not an issue.
What's his head side.
[LAUGHTER]
Finish.
Out here. Let's go.
In on single takedown. Would finish the match. Rasmussen fighting it off. Snags the leg. But there it is. Tech falls. Standing ovation.
For Iowa State and the second joint winner, Yonger Bastida.
[APPLAUSE]
Also resulted a big shout out and you are the boss.
[APPLAUSE]
They may have had Sinus Caldwell.
, Carlson.
And the South.
Dakota State Jackrabbits.
Today's match 29 to 7 Kevin Dresser and the Cyclones of Iowa State.
Here's a last takedown. Finish the match. Bastida in on the single and just breaks the grip and gets the final takedown to end the meet with a tech. Fall 29 seven final score Iowa State.
Now you know what happens when Yonger Bastida gets surprised early. Final score Iowa State 29 to 7. Hold on here. We're going to be joined by the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones, Kevin Dresser. And I think that we've got him right about now. Coach, what an atmosphere. Talk to me about the atmosphere here in Humboldt High School.
Well, it's wildcat country, baby. Wildcat country. So they came out today, man. You had to crank. I looked in here about 20 minutes before and there was no seats. And there was a bunch of people out in the lobby and I said, well, you're all going to have to figure it out.
Wow.
Well, what about your performance tonight? How'd you feel, coach?
I thought there was a lot of good things. You know, obviously we had a couple guys we didn't have at 141 and 157. Some young guys that got some experience. But, you know, I felt like our starters across the board, we talk a lot about going out and getting after guys and scoring points and entertaining. And I thought we did a good job of entertaining.
Well, coach, we we love having Iowa PBS up here. It was a tremendous event. Thank you for the opportunity and great win. Thanks a lot coach.
Yep. Thanks for being here gang.
Ladies and gentlemen, for Kevin Dresser.
Up next we will come back Luther College and Central College Iowa PBS College wrestling.
Rolling out, rolling out.
[MUSIC]
