[Mickey] Raine, thank you so much for being here on Studio 3 LIVE. Tell us a little bit how you got started in music.

[Raine] Oh, my gosh. Okay. Um, when I was in middle school, my brother picked up the bass and so the bass was in the house and he was playing it. And me, being the little sister, was like, "Well, I gotta have something."

(Laughter)

[Mickey] Yeah.

[Raine] Something particularly drew me to electric guitar, um, which was how it wails, how it emotes, right? I find it to be one of the better lead instruments when it comes to, like, almost feeling vocal and crying. So I ended up getting an electric guitar for Christmas one year in middle school. And that was the beginning.

[Mickey] Watching you perform, I see a lot of, like, blues influence in how you approach the guitar.

[Raine] Totally. Yeah.

[Mickey] Is that a product of, like, early influences? How you learned guitar? Who you gigged with over time? Or a mix of all of those?

[Raine] Definitely all of those things.

[Mickey] Okay.

[Raine] Blues is such a great place to start. Some of the easier scales to learn are sort of built around those blues progressions. But then as you keep diving into that and expanding outward, you realize that it is kind of, like, a center for which a lot of other music expands upon, right? Like, funk, rock, jazz -- A lot of those things start at that core. So I started at that core, too.

[Deisha] And the queen of the stage, y'all know... Raine.

[Raine] When I picked up guitar, the thing I was the most drawn to right away was songwriting. I already had so much to say, but what music gave me the ability to do was to put some oomph behind it and some gusto. And, you know, the truth is, is that people are far more likely to listen to you if you're a young woman who can rip on guitar.

[Mickey] Yeah. Talk a little bit about your creative process. When you're in the studio or you're working on songs, initially you're playing a lot of the instruments and putting a lot of those tracks down. How did you start that process of kind of producing and being in the driver's seat? And how do you then bring other musicians into the fold?

[Raine] The truth is, is I never attack the song the same anymore. I'll pick up bass. I'll pick up guitar. But when I first started bringing that stuff, that material to other musicians, then I got to start being like, "Oh, right." Like, seeing what other people were trying. As a drummer, seeing where their brain was going, it just started to kind of go, like, mind meld. And I started to be like, "Okay, drummer brain. And, like, bass player brain." And now I feel as -- And I've observed that I approach music more from a producer standpoint.

[Mickey] How you creatively engage with the world doesn't end at music.

[Raine] Yeah.

[Mickey] Can you talk a little bit about what kind of other endeavors that you're working on, as well?

[Raine] Yeah, absolutely. So one of them is this climate music project in which I have been in direct communication with environmental scientists for a few years. And I've been like, "Give me the good news." Like, the people are swamped with bad news. People don't necessarily think, "I am going to actively seek out good news." So I was like, "Let me do that." So I was like, "Give me your data solutions." And I then automated and converted their X and Y data and their graphs into sound...

[Mickey] Wow.

[Raine] ...and into music, which the piece "Feel It All" that we're playing, is that piece. There's always opportunities then to share that information because the melodies that are in the song are based on really true and -- and also good. Like, these are solutions data. Where we put our attention, we're more likely to breed more of it.

[Mickey] Switching gears, you had a bit of kind of a music industry brush in being on Season 20 of "The Voice."

[Raine] Yeah.

[Mickey] What was different about that experience for you than you anticipated when you kind of first got involved?

[Raine] Sure. In the beginning, I think they really wanted somebody like myself because I'm a specific character. It's a reality TV show, and all the other singers that were there, for the most part - I'm not gonna speak to absolutely 100% of people - but, like, that was a dream of theirs, to be on the show. And it really wasn't for me because they called me and said, like, "Hey, we saw your YouTube videos and stuff. Like, we're interested."

And if it weren't for it being the pandemic actively at that time, I genuinely wouldn't have done it. I would have been too busy...

[Mickey] Yeah.

[Raine] ...like, playing festivals and all this other stuff.

[Mickey] Yeah.

[Raine] But there was nothing going on. And my family and my friends and my girlfriend at the time were like, "Do it, do it, do it. What's the worst that could happen?"

[Mickey] Yeah. Can you tell me the inspiration behind the song "Why You Gotta"?

[Raine] "Why You Gotta" is actually really interesting. So it's actually from the perspective of essentially a sociopath or a person who, you know, has demonstrated sociopathic behaviors who's also in a position of power. "But I'm a nice guy." You know, like - And, like, kind of this whole - them trying to rationalize their behaviors that they got from, you know, a kind of a peek inside, where did that come from? Did it come from this troubling, you know, upbringing? And then how does that person get to a place where they're able to rationalize their bad behavior and see themselves as a victim? Yeah. So what an interesting song choice. Thanks for asking about it.

[Mickey] Definitely. Yeah, of course. Well, Raine, thank you so much for being here on Studio 3 LIVE. Thank you for joining us on Iowa PBS.
