Iowa PBS and the IGHSAU present girls state soccer highlights special
Join Iowa PBS and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) in reliving the incredible action of past soccer seasons and honoring graduating senior team members. Iowa PBS Sports Soccer Highlights Special, featuring some of the most memorable moments from the girls state soccer championships and more, will premiere live on Facebook and YouTube Saturday, June 13 at 6 p.m.
With the absence of the 2020 IGHSAU soccer season due to COVID-19, many high school student-athletes lost their chance to take the field. This online special includes game highlights from the 2017-2019 championships and interviews with coaches and players, recorded remotely to capture the thoughts and experiences of those most directly impacted.
“I’m incredibly proud of the Iowa PBS Sports team for their dedication to finding innovative ways to feature Iowa girls,” said Iowa PBS Executive Director and General Manager Molly Phillips. “While this is not the way we thought 2020 girls state soccer would be covered, we are honored to provide this service to Iowans — and mark this place in history.”
Iowa PBS Sports Soccer Highlights Special will also serve as a tribute to the graduating class of 2020, who were unable to play their senior season and experience the milestones that go along with it. Senior players discuss memorable moments, what the sport means to them and what they missed most about the season that never happened.
“It was heartbreaking when we realized that keeping our athletes safe meant that spring sports seasons couldn’t be played, but we remain committed to highlighting and supporting the Iowa Girl,” said IGHSAU Executive Director Jean Berger. “While nothing can replace the excitement and experience of state championships at Cownie Soccer Complex, we hope this helps fill the void that so many are feeling.”
Iowa PBS and the IGHSAU hope that Iowa PBS Sports Soccer Highlights Special can provide a space for soccer players, coaches and fans to connect and reflect on past seasons — all while looking forward to enjoying live soccer again in the future.
