Decomposition on the Iowa Forest Floor
Shown is a fallen tree in the forest. Iowa has nutrient-dense soil and is an epicenter for agriculture. Decomposition on a log occurs when a fallen tree slowly breaks down over time. Tiny living things like fungi, insects, and bacteria eat the wood and turn it into soft, crumbly soil. As the log decays, it gives nutrients back to the ground, helping new plants grow.

Classroom Suggestions
Students could:
- Observe how a vegetable may decompose in the classroom and note the similarities between them.
- Develop a model of decomposition showing the system of plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
- Hike in the area and point out the different levels of decomposition on the ground.
- Use plant and animal identification apps to identify macroinvertebrates in the observation area.
