[ Cheers and applause ] Good evening, and welcome to "Studio 3 LIVE."

I'm your host, Mickey Davis.

Tonight we're joined on the "Studio 3 LIVE" stage by Dickie, the stage name of Iowa native Dick Prall.

Dickie's music is a kaleidoscope of influences, combining pop songwriting, distinctly Midwestern rock, and the sensibilities of '60s classics.

After years in the Chicago music scene, Dick returned to Iowa and started performing as Dickie.

Tonight, he is joined on stage by some of Central Iowa's most talented musicians, all of whom contributed to his most recent release, an EP entitled "Head Full of Hiss."

Here to perform songs from this EP and beyond, Please help me.

Welcome to the stage, Dickie.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

How'd you first get started performing music?

Oh, way back in the day.

Um, I'm actually a pretty late bloomer, so I messed around with bands in my early 20s and had songs in my head, and I would try to work with other, like, guitar players, um, to try to map these things out, and it never really landed.

So I just went out and bought a guitar and a chord book, uh, and a buddy of mine who was -- who was a really good player circled -- He circled like four chords and said, "Learn these, throw the book away, and make it up."

And that's exactly what I did.

You currently perform as Dickie.

I know you've gone through a couple iterations.

[ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Uh, where did the -- the inspiration for the name come from?

Absolutely.

So growing up, My father was -- was Richard.

He was Dick.

I was Dickie Bird.

So when my mom passed, it was one of the last things I heard her say was my -- my name is Dickie.

And I purposely thought, well, by calling it Dickie, I mean, I'm still Dick Prall.

And so to me, it was like a good moniker to use, whether it was a band, a revolving cast of folks, whatever it may be.

So it was just like a very malleable idea.

Davis: "Head full of Hiss," you recorded here in Des Moines.

You're performing tonight with the musicians from that record.

Is that correct?

Prall: Yes.

We have a really good time.

They're super fun.

We have a great time together.

What were some of the inspiration for the songs on that -- on that album?

Um, something I've thought of for a while is like, you know, music has been probably the most abusive relationship I've ever had.

Thank you.

Exactly.

So I kind of thought, "Well, I'm going to put out these five songs and see if the needle moves a little bit."

Of the songs that you're performing tonight, is there a particular one that you most enjoy performing?

Off the new record, the song "February Filled," which kind of celebrates the fact that a lot of us suffer from seasonal depression here in the Midwest.

Sure, yeah.

Right?

And it sucks.

Yeah, February is the toughest for sure, yeah.

Right?

Exactly.

Yeah, I worked for Sony for a while under red distribution.

So I really learned kind of that side of the business.

And I had been on the road for about two and a half, almost three years prior, which was tough.

And then through that time, my old tour manager was Wilco's tour manager.

So he kind of like came in at the right time and said, "Look, I'd love for you to come on board.

And I think this is something that you can take on.

Clearly, you've been in a lot of aspects of the industry itself."

And I was like, "Alright," so I started working for those guys.

So that experience was fantastic.

But coming to Des Moines, it's relaxed and I still have those outlets that I need.

And the importance of -- of performance, you know, watching Wilco and what they do and how they do it and the amount of, like, joy that they still get out of it, you know, and even the camaraderie that they have.

And I think that's a big thing, is finding those personalities that you really gel with.

And I feel like I've got that now when you have that kind of kismet situation, like you -- you do want to hold on to it.

And more than hold on to it, You just appreciate it regardless of if they stay or leave.

Get a decent job.

Live life and, like, there's so much material that's gonna come out of just living your life.

Because what I see a lot that happens, I see a lot of original musicians and I have these conversations with these folks who are like, "Man, I wish I was writing my own music.

I wish I was playing my own stuff, but I'm playing eight different cover bands," or whatever.

If you're not enjoying that, if you're not getting anything out of that, you know, obviously in here, maybe that's not the thing to do.

And I think sometimes people think, "Well, I don't want to have a Joe job.

I do have a Joe job.

I have a regular thing, and I've done that for most of my career, you know.

And I have like 7 or 8 records now.

And I think that's -- that's really where I want to focus it, as like, as far as, like, young people is it's okay to, like, just work on your craft, do the things that you need to do for yourself.

There's a lot of men and women that I've spoken to that are like, "Oh man, I wish I would have kept doing this and doing that.

I'm like, "Well, you -- you can still stop and, like, just do your thing.

Yeah.

It's nice to step away from the music and just say, "You know what?

I'm gonna enjoy some weekends.

I'm not gonna book stuff."

Yeah.

"I'm gonna have fun and not feel like I gotta go, go, go, go go, or this is all gonna fall apart.

You know, the wheels are going to come off because I stopped.

Like, I'm gonna park it and walk away.

Come back to it when it's time to go again.

Sounds like the best way the keep the joy involved in it as well.

Absolutely.

And he was this very gregarious, sweet, hilarious, fun guy who had zero fear.
