Germans Immigrate to Iowa

In the 1830s over a million Germans left for America. Many of them settled in Iowa.

The Germans were the largest foreign-born group to come to Iowa. Many came from the Province of Schleswig-Holstein. Poverty was everywhere. Taxes were high and people looked for a way out. In the 1850s America became the way out for a million Germans. Dorothy Logies father came to America with his family in the 1850s. They settled in the Davenport area where the German immigrate population was very large.
