ca. 1940's Video World War II Veteran: John Schnepf

John Schnepf served with the 11th Air Force as crew chief. John worked with the 54th Fighter Squadron in the Aleutian Islands. He tells about working on P-38 E airplanes, the hazards of taking off with extra belly tanks on short runways, and a deadly 30 day fog that claimed 8 of our planes.

ca. 1940's Video World War II Veteran: Richard O. Keep (Dick)

World War II veteran, Dick Keep, remembers a German family sharing thier fresh bread, eggs, wine and rings of liverwurst with his unit. Keep also talks about the concentration camp at Landsburg, and how a hot cup of water saved his life one day.

1830's Video Mississippi River Fuels Iowa Industry

The Mississippi River helped industry by transporting people and materials. Logs floated down the river from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Iowa mills where they were cut into lumber.

2004 Photo River Barge Transporting Coal

Barges transport coal and grain down the Mississippi River in 2004. The Alter Company, organized by Frank R. Alter in Davenport in 1916, is still operating. The company has terminals in New Orleans, St. Paul, La Crosse, and at its main base in Davenport, Iowa. 2004.
