1896-1917 Photo Merle D. Hay

Private Merle D. Hay was an Iowa native from Glidden. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in May of 1917. He was sent to Fort Bliss, Texas, and then to France. He and two other soldiers were killed on November 3 during a German invasion. Private Hay was the first Iowan killed in World War I.

1979 Video Refugee Camp in Southeast Asia

Former US Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn describes conditions in a refugee camp in Southeast Asia. Governors from several US states, including Governor Robert Ray from Iowa, visited the camp in 1979.

Kenneth Lubben served in the Army as a PFC in the 546th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion, called the coast artillery corps at the time. He served January 1943- January 1946.
