Transcript

Narrator: As with any sport, players scoring the most points got the most attention. However, in six-on-six basketball, defensive players garnered a great deal of recognition as well.

Reporter: in the guard court, Kim Peters of Andrew named captain.

Narrator: Kim Peters, a guard for Andrew High School, received a standing ovation at vets auditorium in 1976 when she was named captain of the all-tournament team. Peters, who was born with only one hand, was recognized as one of the state's best.

Kim (Peters) Wilson Andrew H.S., 1973-1977: Being captain is something I'm very proud of. It really starts to sink in when people, years later, and I'm saying 20 years later, come up and say, "I remember when you played and were captain of the all-tournament team." The gratitude -- how to say thank you for even remembering or wondering why you remembered -- what was going on after this many years, people still remember, I'm still in awe about that.

Narrator: As guards became more and more skilled, they began to outwit the forwards. Pressure defense improved to the point that high-scoring forwards couldn't dominate the game. They couldn't just drive and shoot at will.

Kim (Peters) Wilson Andrew H.S., 1973-1977: I think the biggest thing was I'm a defender, I don't know what's going to happen, but my job is to figure out what's going to happen, and that's a challenge.
