Transcript

Narrator: out of several hundred teams statewide, just sixteen made the trek to the state tournament in Des Moines. Before classification based on school size came along in the 1990s, there was only one championship game.

Deb Coates, Mediapolis H.S., 1971-1975: If you won the state tournament, you were the top in all of Iowa. That really made it special. You were the only light up there shining, and it wasn't for class "A" or class "B" or class 1 or 2 or whatever. You were the only one. That really made it special because when you think of all the kids out there working so hard and trying to get to where you got and you're the ones that did it, it really feels good.
