From 1861 to 1865 Iowa sent many men to fight in the battles of the Civil War.

(drum roll) In answer to Lincoln’s call for troops, Iowa sent 46 infantry regiments, nine regiments of artillery, the bases for one Negro regiment and nine regiments of cavalry. Present Arms! Many of these men carried diaries to record their thoughts. (drums) Come to the ready… On the bluff we put the first cartridges in our guns (drums)
