Late 1930's to Early 1940's Video Harvesting Oats

Farm family harvests seed oats. A truck follows the tractor to receive the harvested oats. The farmer maintains his equipment.

1941 Photo Elevators at Quaker Oats plant

Elevators at Quaker Oats plant. In 1873 three families-- the Stuart, Higley and the Douglas families-- established an oatmeal mill in Cedar Rapids. It became Quaker Oats. Cedar Rapids, Iowa. July, 1941.

Some of Iowa's Civil War heroes continued in public service after the war. Annie Wittenmeyer opened a home for Civil War orphans.

Prohibition outlawed the manufacture of alcohol. But that didn't stop some Iowans. Illegal stills were in operation around the state. When law officers found them, they took the equipment. ca. 1925

1839 Video Iowa City Becomes the Capital City

By 1839 Iowa City was surveyed and laid out into lots. The seat of government was moved to Iowa City in 1841.

1864(?)-1943 Photo George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver 1864(?)-1943. Agricultural chemist Carver discovered over 300 uses for peanuts and many uses for soybeans, pecans and sweet potatoes. He attended Simpson College in Indianola and transferred to Iowa State College. He taught there for a brief period.
