Half of Iowa's men went to battle during the Civil War, 1861-1865. While they were away from home, women ran the farms and businesses back home in Iowa.

1840 Photo First Iowa City Capitol Building

First Iowa City capitol building. Batter's Capitol Building in Iowa City was used as the capitol while Old Capitol was constructed. Des Moines was later named the capital city.

ca. 1940's Video B-29 Veterans

A reunion of World War II B-29 bomber pilots is featured. Originally aired in 2002.

1861-1865 Video Grenville Dodge's Spy Network

During the Civil War, 1861-1865, Grenville Dodge's spy network had over 100 spies behind enemy lines. Often freed slaves were employed as spies.

Before the state began erecting a uniform system of road signs, private citizens or groups put up signs. This Clayton County, Iowa road sign provided driving directions to Monona, McGregor, Elkader and Garnavillo. 1923.

1975 Video Iowans Became Aware of Diverse Cultures

Des Moines Register columnist, David Yepsen, talks about refugees helping Iowans to be more aware of diverse cultures.

1960s Photo Collins Radio Helps in the Space Race, ca.1966

Engineers test the communication system provided by Cedar Rapids based Collins Radio Company for the three-man Apollo spacecraft. The system was used in the program to land American astronauts on the moon. It provided voice and data communications with Earth for the Apollo command module.
