Workers moving decorative stone pieces in place during restoration of the state capitol. In 1983 a major restoration project began on the exterior and interior of the state capitol in Des Moines. The project took about 18 years to complete.

In April of 1944, 27-year old Second Lieutenant Ray Schleihs of Johnston, was starting his overseas tour of duty. Schleihs had joined the Army Air Corps in March of 1942 and was now piloting B-17 Flying Fortresses from a base in Framlingham, England.

During the restoration of the Iowa Capitol in the 1990s, urns eroded by the severities of Iowa's weather were replaced by new ones cut from Indiana limestone.

1800's Video Prairie Fires on the Frontier

In the 1800s prairie fires were common occurrences. They swept across the land wiping out everything in their paths.

During the battle for Faid (fa-YEED) Pass, Sergeant Barron's mortar squad was nearby, perched on a hill, waiting to protect the retreating Allied troops. Barron began to survey the road below his position with binoculars.
