ca. 1940's Video World War II Veteran: William Tyner (Bill)

Bill Tyner was a forward observer in the 928th field artillery battalion of the 103rd infantry division. He tells us about various skirmishes with the Germans before his battalion ended up in Austria.

1885 Photo Mourning the Death of President Ulysses S. Grant, 1885

Crowds gather at the capitol on Aug. 8, 1885 to mourn the death of President Ulysses S. Grant. During times of crisis, the capitol often was the place Iowans came to learn the latest information or to feel involved. Grant died on July 23, 1885.

Mid 1800's Video Sod Houses

In the mid 1800s settlers in parts of Iowa where no trees were found built houses from sod.

1800's Photo Punched Clam Shell

This image shows a clam shell that that has been punched. Several buttons were produced. Clamming for button manufacturing was big business in the late 1800's along the Mississippi River.

ca. 1940's Video World War II Veteran: Elvin Moritz

Moritz and other members of the 168th were surrounded by German troops at the Battle of Faid pass in February of 1943. Major Robert Moore of Villisca was in command of the more than 900 men cut-off from Allied Forces.

Dr. Philip Hubbard (1921-2002), first African-American professor at the University of Iowa, recalls changes at the university in the late 1960s.
