1890 Photo The Brick Capitol in Des Moines, 1858-84

This structure served as the state capitol from 1858 until 1884. It was located just to the south of the present day capitol, on the site where the Soldiers and Sailors Monument now stands. ca. 1890

A group of French people came to Iowa in 1857. They started a utopian community.

1991 Photo Soldiers Returning from Persian Gulf

A parade in Mason City honored the returning soldiers from Iowa's 1133rd Truck Company. The soldiers were returning from a deployment in the Persian Gulf region. 1991.

1975 Video Refugees Heal Vietnam Wounds

Former US Ambassador to Cambodia Kenneth M. Quinn talks about how refugees from Southeast Asia helped Iowans as they came to terms with the issues surrounding the Vietnam War.

ca. 1940's Video World War II Veteran: Phyllis Freymann Koopman

Phyllis served in the Waves as an Aviation Machinists Mate 3rd Class. She had wanted to be a sailor as a little kid, because a member of her family was in the Navy. The Navy opened to women in the summer of 1943, and Phyllis joined that fall, as soon as she turned 20.

Late 1700's and Early 1800's Video Why Move to Iowa?

Pioneers settled in Iowa in the late 1700s and early 1800s for a variety of reasons. Many came for the rich farm land. Some came to escape religious persecution or sickness. Some came to escape the law.

Early 1800's Video Pioneers Travel in Groups

In the early 1800s people traveling to Iowa to settle often came in caravans. They relied on farmer families along the way to provide them with fresh food.

ca. 1940's Video World War II and the Home Front: Ed Tubbs

To help win the fight from the home front, the U.S. government asked its citizens to increase production of everything from ammunition to food. Ed Tubbs went to work for the Jasper Country Extension Service to promote Victory Gardens but eventually volunteered for military service.
