1942 Photo Telephone switchboard operator

Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) switchboard operators in training. This was part of a communication course for WAACs at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. 1942.

1932 Photo School and Outhouse, 1932

One room schoolhouse in Lincoln Township, Kossuth County. The small white building in the background is the outhouse. Before indoor plumbing, students had to use outhouses as restrooms. 1932.

1870's-present Video Norwegians in Iowa

Norwegians immigrated to Iowa for many reasons. Many were escaping problems in their homeland including overpopulation, lack of farmland, and the social climate. Norwegians were Iowa’s third largest immigrant group.

1929-1939 Video The Great Depression Ends

World War II pulled the nation out of the Great Depression.

1914 Photo Solbrig flying before a crowd

Oscar Solbrig flying in an exhibition in Davenport. Oscar and Mary Solbrig were aviation pioneers. In addition to flying, Oscar built his own plane. Mary was an airplane mechanic, and she was in charge of promoting the exhibitions. 1914.

1912 Photo Men Constructing Bridge

Men constructed this bridge located on the Lincoln Highway. The bridge, called the Eureka Bridge, was east of the town of Jefferson. The Lincoln Highway was later renamed U.S. 30.
